Psalm 107:17

Psalm 107:17

Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

a. ASV: Fools because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

b. YLT: Fools, by means of their transgression, And by their iniquities, afflict themselves.

c. Classic Amplified: Some are fools [made ill] because of the way of their transgressions and are afflicted because of their iniquities.

d. Septuagint [Psalm 107:17 in our Bible is Psalm 106:17 in the Septuagint]: He helped them out of the way of their iniquity; for they were brought low because of their iniquities.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/ Writings: Fools because of their sinful path and because of their iniquities, were afflicted.

1. Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

a. Fools [Strong: 191 ʼĕvîyl, ev-eel'; from an unused root (meaning to be perverse); (figuratively) silly:—fool(-ish) (man).]

b. because [Strong: 1870 derek, deh'-rek; from H1869; a road (as trodden); figuratively, a course of life or mode of action, often adverb:—along, away, because of, by, conversation, custom, (east-) ward, journey, manner, passenger, through, toward, (high-) (path-) way(-side), whither(-soever).]

c. [of their] transgression [Strong: 6588  peshaʻ, peh'-shah; from H6586; a revolt (national, moral or religious):—rebellion, sin, transgression, trespass.]

d. [and because of their] iniquities [Strong: 5771 ʻâvôn, aw-vone'; or עָווֹן ʻâvôwn; (2 Kings 7:9; Psalm 51:5 [7]), from H5753; perversity, i.e. (moral) evil:—fault, iniquity, mischeif, punishment (of iniquity), sin.]

e. [are] afflicted [Strong: 6031 ʻânâh, aw-naw'; a primitive root (possibly rather identical with H6030 through the idea of looking down or browbeating); to depress literally or figuratively, transitive or intransitive (in various applications, as follows):—abase self, afflict(-ion, self), answer (by mistake for H6030), chasten self, deal hardly with, defile, exercise, force, gentleness, humble (self), hurt, ravish, sing (by mistake for H6030), speak (by mistake for H6030), submit self, weaken, × in any wise.]

1). Sinful lifestyles will lead to destruction and suffering. In this passage it led individuals to circumstances where they needed to be delivered and healed.

a). Psalm 107:17-22 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
107:18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
107:19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
107:20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
107:21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
107:22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
