1). Louis Goldberg, Deuteronomy: Middle Eastern treaties began with a historical prologue that indicated the events leading up to the treaties ratification. In deuteronomy, Moses likewise begins with a historical survey of Israel’s experiences from the time they left Mount horeb to the time they reached Jordan’s east bank. Israel’s knowledge of God came through two sources: revelation and specific historic acts. In the latter we see the faithful God who had worked in history to protect His people. The appeal, therefore, to the second generation was that they should give allegiance to their sponsor, God. Even though a first generation was unfaithful, God remained faithful to bring a second generation to the borders of Canaan.
