Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

1. “Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him…”

2. “...Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:”

d. gods [Strong: 430 'elohiym el-o-heem' plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.]

h. [and] change [Strong: 2498 chalaph khaw-laf' a primitive root; properly, to slide by, i.e. (by implication) to hasten away, pass on, spring up, pierce or change:--abolish, alter, change, cut off, go on forward, grow up, be over, pass (away, on, through), renew, sprout, strike through.]

i. [your] clothes [Strong: 8071 simlah sim-law' perhaps by permutation for the feminine of 5566 (through the idea of a cover assuming the shape of the object beneath); a dress, especially a mantle:--apparel, cloth(-es, -ing), garment, raiment]

1). The horrible slaughter of the men of the Hivites over the rape of Dinah, Jacob’s daughter had just occurred. To which Jacob was very upset, thinking that this would bring on him and his household  the wrath of the Canaanites and Perizzites. So Jacob, in the fear of God, commanded his household to get rid of all their idolatry and sanctify themselves, and as a family, by God’s direction, they would return to Bethel where he committed his life to God more deeply.

35:2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

35:3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

35:4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

35:5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
