1 Chronicles 15:15
And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God
upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to
the word of the LORD.
a. NLT: Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on
their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the LORD had instructed Moses.
b. NIV: And the Levites carried the ark of God with
the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the
word of the LORD.

1. “And the children of the Levites bare the ark of
God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon…”

1). Of the three families transporting the
Tabernacle two families were given wagons to transport what they were
responsible for, but one family, the Kohathites who had the responsibility of
carrying the furniture, including the Ark, there were no wagons given.
a). Numbers 7:1-9 And it came to pass on the day
that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified
it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels
thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;
7:2 That the princes of Israel, heads of the house
of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that
were numbered, offered:
7:3 And they brought their offering before the Lord,
six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for
each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle.
7:4 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
7:5 Take it of them, that they may be to do the
service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto
the Levites, to every man according to his service.
7:6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and
gave them unto the Levites.
7:7 Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons
of Gershon, according to their service:
7:8 And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the
sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son
of Aaron the priest.
7:9 But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none:
because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should
bear upon their shoulders.
2. “…as Moses commanded according to the word of
the LORD.”

1). The law clearly instructed the Kohathites to
carry the furniture and vessels of the sanctuary.
a). Numbers 3:27-31 And of Kohath was the
family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of
the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the
Kohathites.
3:28 In the number of all the males, from a month
old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the
sanctuary.
3:29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch
on the side of the tabernacle southward.
3:30 And the chief of the house of the father of
the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
3:32 And their charge shall be the ark, and the
table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary
wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.
b). Numbers 4:15 And when Aaron and his sons have
made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as
the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear
it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are
the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
