And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

1. “And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ…”

Of the instances where sozo is used, fourteen relate to deliverance from disease or demon possession; in twenty instances, the inference is to the rescue of physical life from some impending peril or instant death; the remaining twenty times, the reference is to spiritual salvation.]


1). The Acts of the Apostles, Robert A. Tourville: The question, “What must I do to be saved?” shows the extent of the missionaries’ ministry and testimony in Philippi and at the prison. The jailer knew that he needed “to be saved.” The word “saved” (sotho) is an aorist passive subjunctive. The aorist shows the saving needed to be done at a point of time.. The passive reveals that he knew he could not save himself. The subjunctive states he believed it was possible for him.  


2).C. I. Scofield Notes under Romans 1:16 Salvation: “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes: as justification, redemption, grace, propitiation, imputation, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification.”

1). It is the will of God that the whole family be saved not just one or two out of the family. Scripture testifies clearly that it is not God’s will for men or women to perish. 


a). 1 Timothy 2:4-6 [Amplified Bible] Who wishes all men to be saved and [increasingly] to perceive and recognize and discern and know precisely and correctly the [divine] Truth.

2:5 For there [is only] one God, and [only] one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

2:6 Who gave Himself as a ransom for all [people, a fact that was] attested to at the right and proper time.


2). Even under the Old Covenant God made it clear he did not desire any one to perish.


a). Ezekiel 18:30-32 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.


b). Ezekiel 33:11-16 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

12 Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.

13 When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

14 Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;

15 If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

16 None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.


3). Hell was not created for man, hell was created for the devil and his angels. It is only because of man’s refusal to repent and accept the redemption that is found only in Christ that man ends up in hell.


a). Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
