Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

1. “Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother…”

a. Paul [Strong: 3972. Paulos pow'-los of Latin origin; (little; but remotely from a derivative of 3973, meaning the same); Paulus, the name of a Roman and of an apostle:--Paul, Paulus.]

b. [a] prisoner [Strong: 1198. desmios des'-mee-os from 1199; a captive (as bound):--in bonds, prisoner.]

c. [of] Jesus [Strong: 2424. Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

d. Christ [Strong: 5547. Christos khris-tos' from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]

1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: Philemon, (fi-le-mon; “affectionate”). A member of the church of Colossae, who owed his conversion to the apostle Paul, for such is the interpretation generally assigned to the words: “You owe to me even your own self as well” Philemon 19). To him Paul addressed his epistle in epistle in behalf on Onesimus. His character, as given in that letter, wass one of great nobility. The apostle commends his faith and love, his benevolence and hospitality, and his docile, sympathizing, and forgiving spirit. His house at Colossae was shown in the time of Theodoret. Tradition represents him as bishop of that city having suffered martyrdom.
