But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

1. “But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison…”

1). The Acts of the Apostles, Robert A. Tourville: Christians could not be ill-treated at the whim of prejudiced groups. Paul, therefore, says, “No, indeed! They have not shown common justice. Beyond this, Paul and Silas were not even given the courtesy oto declare their Roman citizenship which gave them rights beyond common justice. The magistrates had catered to the masters of the slave girl. First, they humiliated the missionaries publicly by ripping their clothes from their bodies. Third, they beat them with rods, and again in public. Fourth, they threw them in prison. Paul suggests that at least the magistrates should publicly acknowledge the injustice.
