And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

1. “And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair…”

1). J. Vernon McGee: When it says that he “cursed” them, it doesn’t mean that he swore at them, but he pronounced a curse upon them and made them sware that they would not continue to intermarry with foreigners.

2. “...and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.”

1). The Jews who came back from Babylon who had married foreign wives violating the Mosaic law (Deuteronomy 23:3-6; Ezra 10:1-3), agreed to divorce them and the children that came from those marriages.

a). Ezra 10:1-3 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

10:2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

10:3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

2). The priests also who married foreign wives agreed to divorce them.

a). Ezra 10:18, 19  And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

10:19 And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.
