Acts 10:38
How
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went
about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was
with him.
a. NLT: And you know that God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went
around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was
with him.
b. NIV: how God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and
healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
c. YLT: Jesus who is from
Nazareth -- how God did anoint him with the Holy Spirit and power; who went
through, doing good, and healing all those oppressed by the devil, because God
was with him;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: How God
anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and
with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good
and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the
power of] the devil, for God was with Him.
e. Worrell Translation: How God
anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power; Who went about doing good,
and healing all that were oppressed by the Devil; because God was with Him.
1.
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power…”
a. How [Strong: 5613 * hos hoce

1). This
of course is referring to the moment immediately after Jesus was baptized in
water. He was also baptized in the Holy Ghost.
a). Luke
3:21, 22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus
also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
3:22 And
the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice
came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well
pleased.
2). John
the Baptist witnessed the Spirit descending upon Jesus.
a). John
1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same
said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on
him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
3). Jesus acknowledged that he himself being
filled the Holy Ghost was a fulfillment of Isaiah 61:1, 2.
a). Luke
4:16-21 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his
custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to
read.
4:17 And
there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had
opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel
to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance
to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them
that are bruised,
4:19 To
preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
4:20 And
he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the
eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
4:21 And
he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
4). Most
of Christianity believe that Jesus worked miracles because he was God, but that
is not really true. Yes he was God. He was 100% God and 100% man, he was not 50-50. He
was and is God manifested in the flesh.
a). 1
Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto
the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
5). What
many within Christianity are not aware of is that when Jesus became man he emptied
himself.
a).
Philippians 2:5-7 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
2:6 Who,
being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
2:7 But
made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was
made in the likeness of men:
b).
made…of no reputation (2758 * keno) to empty, make empty. (Romans 4:14,
“make void”; 1 Corinthians 1:17, “make of none effect”; 1 Corinthians 9:15,
“make void”; 2 Corinthians 9:3, “be in vain”.)
6). Of
what did Jesus empty of himself? Jesus emptied himself of all his supernatural ability as God. When Jesus became a man He emptied Himself,
made Himself of none effect in supernatural ability. He laid aside His
supernatural abilities when he became man. He was still God, but he was also
man.
a).
Jesus emptied himself of the glory of the Godhead that he had before his
incarnation, before the world was created.
(1) John
17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory
which I had with thee before the world was.
b). Jesus
emptied himself of his Omnipotence while on earth. When he ministered on earth
he ministered as a man anointed and led by the Holy Ghost. All of the
manifestations of the miraculous can be explained as manifestations of the
gifts and operations of the Holy Ghost. Jesus did not do one miracle until
after he was filled with the Holy Ghost.
(1) Acts
10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power:
who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for
God was with him.
(2) Luke
(3) Matthew
12:22-28 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb:
and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
12:23 And
all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the Son of David?
12:24 But
when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth cast out devils, but
by Beelzebub the prince of devils.
12:25 And
Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against
itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself
shall not stand:
12:26 And
if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his
kingdom stand?
12:27 And
if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore
they shall be your judges.
12:28 But
if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto
you.
c).
Jesus emptied Himself of his Omniscience. As a man he increased in wisdom and
knowledge.
(1) Luke
2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
(2) Hebrews
5:7 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he
suffered.
(3) Isaiah
7:14-16 Therefore the LORD himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin
shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
7:15 Butter
and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the
good.
7:16 For
before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land
that thou abhorest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
d).
Jesus was so full of wisdom that even at the age of twelve he astonished the
doctors of the law in his day: Luke 2:46, 47 And it came to pass, that after
three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors,
both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard him were
astonished at his understanding and answers. Jesus did not ask questions just
because he didn’t know. I’m sure some of the questions he asked were to find
answers, but some of the questions he asked had answers he already knew. This
is I’m sure the nature of some of the questions Jesus asked and it was these
type of questions that blew away the doctors of the law that Jesus was sitting
among.
(1).
Matthew 21:23-27 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and
the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what
authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
12:24 And
Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye
tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
12:25 The
baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with
themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did
ye not then believe him?
12:26 But
if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
12:27 And
they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither
tell I you by what authority I do these things.
(2).
Matthew 22:41-46 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
22:42 Saying,
What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
22:43 He
saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
22:44 The
LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies
thy footstool?
22:45 If
David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
22:46 And
no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth
ask him any more questions.
7). When
Jesus ministered on earth, working miracles, healing the sick and casting out
devils, he was doing it not as God but as a man filled with the Holy Ghost.
Read carefully the following passage.
a). Matthew
12:22-28 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb:
and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
12:23
And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the Son of David?
12:24
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth cast out devils,
but by Beelzebub the prince of devils.
12:25
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided
against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided
against itself shall not stand:
12:26
And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his
kingdom stand?
12:27
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out?
Therefore they shall be your judges.
12:28
But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come
unto you.
b). Jesus
healed and cast out devils by the Spirit of God. Because he was anointed to do so, (Luke 4:16-21).
2. “…who went about doing good…”
a. who [Strong: 846 * autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]
b. who

2064; to traverse (literally):--come, depart, go (about, abroad, everywhere,
over, through, throughout), pass (by, over, through, throughout), pierce
through, travel, walk through.]
d. doing
good [Strong: 2109 * euergeteo yoo-erg-et-eh'-o from 2110; to be
philanthropic:--do good.]
3. “…and
healing all that were oppressed of the devil;

2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a

b. healing
[2390 * iaomai][Strong:

verb; to cure (literally or figuratively):--heal, make whole.][Thayer: to cure, heal, to make whole, to free from
errors and sins, to bring about (one's) salvation.]
c. all

(whither (underneath) or where (below) or time (when (at)):--among, by, from,

applications, especially of inferior position or condition, and specially,
covertly or moderately.]
f. the devil
[1228 * diabolos] [Strong:
false accuser, devil, slanderer.] [Zodhiates:
a false accuser, used of the devil.]
1). Here
Luke, the writer of Acts, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost refers to
sickness as oppression of the devil. In light of this, if divine healing is not
part of the New Covenant, i.e., if it is not God’s will to heal every New
Covenant believer, that God in his sovereign will heals some but not others.
Then that means that God in this so called, “sovereign will” has chosen to
leave some of his children under the oppression of the devil and some of them
He chooses to free. This kind of teaching is hogwash. How about the believer
who says he can’t quit lusting, or the believer who says he can’t get free of
pornography, or alcohol, or cigarettes, or drugs. Do you say the same thing?
Please see my notes of Isaiah 53:4.
2).
Jesus in the gospel of Luke called sickness satanic bondage.
a). Luke
13:10-16 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the
sabbath.
13:11 And,
behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and
was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
13:12 And
when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art
loosed from thine infirmity.
13:13 And
he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified
God.
13:14 And
the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had
healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in
which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the
sabbath day.
13:15 The
Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on
the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to
watering?
13:16 And
ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo,
these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
3). World Outreach Church Daily
Devotional: 11/22/11 Two major flows of anointing operated in Jesus’ ministry,
and these same flows are still on the body of Christ today. One flow is like
lightning. It hits every now and then; we don’t know when, where, or how. These
“bolts of lightning” are manifestations or gifts of the Spirit that operate as
God wills. The other flow of anointing is like electricity, flowing freely when
activated by faith...At times, Jesus operated in
the manifestations of the Spirit, delivering a miracle with no faith on the
recipient’s part. These were manifestations of God’s sovereign side, where His
power flowed like lightning. But a majority of the time, Jesus would teach and
preach to develop faith in people. Then by faith, individuals would activate
His power and release it to flow like electricity. Jesus hasn’t changed. If the
majority received by faith back then, that’s how the majority will receive
today. Let the hand of faith release God’s power to flow in you.
4. “…for God was with him.”
a. for
[Strong: 3754 * hoti hot'-ee neuter of 3748 as conjunction;
demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning
that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though,
why.]
b. God
[Strong: 2316 * theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity,
especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by
Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]
c. was

d. with
[Strong: 3326 * meta met-ah' a primary preposition (often used
adverbially); properly, denoting accompaniment; "amid" (local or
causal); modified variously according to the case (genitive association, or
accusative succession) with which it is joined; occupying an intermediate
position between 575 or 1537 and 1519 or 4314; less intimate than 1722 and less
close than 4862):--after(-ward), X that he again, against, among, X and, +
follow, hence, hereafter, in, of, (up-)on, + our, X and setting, since,
(un-)to, + together, when, with (+ -out). Often used in composition, in
substantially the same relations of participation or proximity, and transfer or
sequence.]
e. him [Strong:
846 * autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the
base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive
pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and
(with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one,
the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self,
(your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in,
-into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together,
very, which.]
1). Jesus
was God manifested in the flesh, 100% God and 100% man, but because the Godhead
is three Persons, God was also with him. Jesus did not minister on earth as God, he ministered as a man filled with the Holy Spirit.
