Isaiah 4:3
And it
shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in
Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living
in Jerusalem:
a.
NLT: All who remain in Zion will be a holy people—those who survive the
destruction of Jerusalem and are recorded among the living.
b.
NIV: Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be called holy,
all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem.
c.
Amplified Bible: And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be
called holy, everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem and for eternal
life,
d.
Septuagint: And it shall be, [that] the remnant left in Sion, and the remnant
left in Jerusalem, [even] all that are appointed to life in Jerusalem, shall be
called holy.
e.
Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: Of every remnant that will be in Zion
and every remaining one in Jerusalem, ‘Holy” will be said of him
1. “And it
shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in
Jerusalem…”
a.
he that is left [7604 * sha’ar] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to swell
up, i.e. be (causatively, make) redundant:--leave, (be) left, let, remain,
remnant, reserve, the rest.]
b.
Zion [6726 * Tsiyown] [Strong: the same (regularly) as 6725; Tsijon (as a
permanent capital), a mountain of Jerusalem:--Zion.
c.
he that remaineth [3498 * yathar] [Strong: a primitive root; to jut over
or exceed; by implication, to excel; (intransitively) to remain or be left;
causatively, to leave, cause to abound, preserve:--excel, leave (a remnant),
left behind, too much, make plenteous, preserve, (be, let) remain(-der, -ing, -
nant), reserve, residue, rest.]
d.
Jerusalem [3389 * Yruwshalaim] [Strong: a dual (in allusion to its two main
hills (the true pointing, at least of the former reading, seems to be that
of 3390)); probably from (the passive participle of) 3384 and 7999;
founded peaceful; Jerushalaim or Jerushalem, the capital city of
Palestine:--Jerusalem.]
e.
This phrase gives us context and the context is immediately after the second
coming of Christ. There are a number of Scriptures that will help us verify
this.
1).
Zechariah 13:7-9 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that
is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall
be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
13:8
And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts
therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
13:9
And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as
silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my
name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say,
The Lord is my God.
2).
Zechariah 13:7 was fulfilled during Jesus’ first coming immediately before his
trial and crucifixion.
a) Matthew 26:31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All
ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite
the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
b).
Matthew 26:47-56 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came,
and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests
and elders of the people.
26:48
Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss,
that same is he: hold him fast.
26:49
And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
26:50
And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and
laid hands on Jesus and took him.
26:51
And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew
his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
26:52
Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they
that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
26:53
Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give
me more than twelve legions of angels?
26:54
But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
26:55
In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a
thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in
the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
26:56
But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.
Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
3).
Zechariah 13:8, 9 will be fulfilled during the tribulation period, immediately
before Christ comes back, during which time 2/3rds of the Jewish people will be
slaughtered. Because of that loss of life the following passages have the
similar language, yet all refer to the same devastating loss of life.
a).
Isaiah 10:20-22 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of
Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay
upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel,
in truth.
10:21
The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
10:22
For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them
shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
b).
Zechariah 12:14 All the families that remain, every family apart, and their
wives apart.
c).
Romans 9:27, 28 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the
children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
9:28
For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short
work will the Lord make upon the earth.
2. “…shall
be called holy…”
a.
shall be called [559 * ‘amar] [Strong: a primitive root; to say (used with
great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify,
challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare,
demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly,
promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X
suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X

morally); (as noun) God (by eminence), an angel, a saint, a sanctuary:--holy
(One), saint.]
1).
All of them shall be called “holy” because they will all be saved when Christ
comes back.
a).
Romans 11:26, 27 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There
shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from
Jacob:
11:27
For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
2).
Immediately after the second coming of Christ the veil of unbelief will be
removed from the nation of Israel. The whole nation will accept him as the Messiah
before they go into a national mourning period.
a).
Zechariah 12:10-14 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they
shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one
mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is
in bitterness for his firstborn.
12:11
In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of
Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.
12:12
And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David
apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and
their wives apart;
12:13
The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of
Shimei apart, and their wives apart;
12:14
All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
b).
Ezekiel 36:25-28 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be
clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
36:26
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I
will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart
of flesh.
36:27
And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and
ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
36:28
And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my
people, and I will be your God.
4. “…even
every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:”
a.
written [3789 * kathab] [Strong: a primitive root; to grave, by implication, to
write (describe, inscribe, prescribe, subscribe):--describe, record, prescribe,
subscribe, write(-ing, -ten).]
b.
living [2416 * chay] [Strong: from 2421; alive; hence, raw (flesh); fresh
(plant, water, year), strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine
singular and masculine plural) life (or living thing), whether literally or
figuratively:--+ age, alive, appetite, (wild) beast, company, congregation,
life(-time), live(-ly), living (creature, thing), maintenance, + merry,
multitude, + (be) old, quick, raw, running, springing, troop.]
