Psalm 45:7

Psalm 45:7

Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

a. ASV: Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness: Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

b. YLT: Thou hast loved righteousness and hatest wickedness, Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee, Oil of joy above thy companions.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: You love righteousness, uprightness, and right standing with God and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows.

d. Septuagint [Psalm 45:7 in our Bibles is Psalm 44:8 in the Septuagint]:  Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy fellows.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings [Psalm 45:7 in our Bible is Psalm 45:8 in the Jewish Bible]: You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, anointed you, with oil of joy from among your peers.

1. “Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness…”

a. [Thou] lovest [Strong: 157 ʼâhab, aw-hab'; or אָהֵב ʼâhêb ; a primitive root; to have affection for (sexually or otherwise):—(be-) love(-d, -ly, -r), like, friend.]

b. Righteousness [Strong: 6664 tsedeq, tseh'-dek; from H6663; the right (natural, moral or legal); also (abstractly) equity or (figuratively) prosperity:—× even, (× that which is altogether) just(-ice), (un-)right(-eous) (cause, -ly, -ness).]

c. [and] hatest [Strong: 8130 sânêʼ, saw-nay'; a primitive root; to hate (personally):—enemy, foe, (be) hate(-ful, -r), odious, × utterly.]

d. wickedness [Strong: 7562 reshaʻ, reh'-shah; from H7561; a wrong (especially moral):—iniquity, wicked(-ness).]

1). The rule of Christ Jesus will be the epitome of what is right and just concerning all things. It would behoove us to develop by the power of the Holy Ghost the same characteristics. Jesus loves righteousness and hates wickedness and that is the way he will rule.

a). Isaiah 11:1-5 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
11:2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
11:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

2). Everyone and everything wicked will be removed from his presence and put in hell.

a). Matthew 13:41, 42 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

2. “…therefore God, thy God…”

a. [therefore] God God [Strong: 430 ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem'; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:—angels, × exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, × mighty.]

b. [thy] God [Strong: 430 ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem'; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:—angels, × exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, × mighty.]

1).These two Hebrew words of Psalms 45:7 are some of the most powerful in the Bible in light of Hebrews 1:9. In them we have God speaking to the Son and calling him, his God, but we also have the same God referring to himself as God, to the Son. Wow! His knowledge is too wonderful for me!

3. “…hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

a. [hath] anointed [thee] [Strong: 4886 mâshach, maw-shakh': to rub with oil, i.e. to anoint; by implication, to consecrate; also to paint:--anoint, paint.]

b. [with the]oil [Strong: 8081 shemen, sheh'-men; from 8080; grease, especially liquid (as from the olive, often perfumed); figuratively, richness:--anointing, X fat (things), X fruitful, oil((-ed)), ointment, olive, + pine.]

c. [of] gladness [Strong: 8342 sâsôwn, saw-sone'; or שָׂשֹׂן sâsôn; from H7797; cheerfulness; specifically, welcome:--gladness, joy, mirth, rejoicing.]

1). The only anointing I know of that was applied to Christ Jesus was the anointing that he received at his baptism when he was anointed with and by the Holy Ghost.

a). Luke 3:21, 22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

2). The Scriptures clearly refer this to the anointing by the Spirit.

a). Luke 4:16-21 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

3). Scripture describes Christ Jesus as “a man of sorrows” and this is a faithful picture of him, but I am fully persuaded it is not the complete picture of him. Jesus was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” but as our text says, he was also anointed with the oil of gladness, he was full of rejoicing, joy and mirth.

a). Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
