Mark 6:4


Mark 6:4

But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

a. NLT: Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.”

b. NIV: Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

c. YLT: And Jesus said to them -- 'A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his kindred, and in his own house;'

1. “But Jesus, said unto them…”

a. But [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

c. said [Strong: 3004 lego leg'-o a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas 2036 and 5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while 4483 is properly to break silence merely, and 2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:--ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]

2. “…A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”

a. [A] prophet [Strong: 4396 prophetes prof-ay'-tace from a compound of 4253 and 5346; a foreteller ("prophet"); by analogy, an inspired speaker; by extension, a poet:--prophet.

o. house [Strong: 3614 oikia oy-kee'-ah from 3624; properly, residence (abstractly), but usually (concretely) an abode (literally or figuratively); by implication, a family (especially domestics):--home, house(-hold).]

1). Jesus was revealing to us here that his family along with the others in his list didn’t think much of him, in fact they thought he was base. In other verses it is clear that his family thought he was insane because he was ordaining apostles and telling them to preach, to heal the sick, and to cast out devils.

a). Mark 3:13-21 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
3:14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
3:15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
3:16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;
3:17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
3:18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
3:19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.
3:20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
3:21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

2). During his earthly ministry his family, in particular his brothers did not approve of him. But after his resurrection they did.

a). Psalm 69:7-10 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
69:8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.
69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
69:10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

b). Acts 1:13, 14 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
