Acts 2:2

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

a. ASV: And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

b. YLT: And there came suddenly out of the heaven a sound as of a bearing violent breath, and it filled all the house where they were sitting,

1. “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2532 in the following manner: and (8,173x), also (514x), even (108x), both (43x), then (20x), so (18x), likewise (13x), not tr. b. suddenly [Strong: 869 áphnō, af'-no; adverb from G852 (contraction); unawares, i.e. unexpectedly:—suddenly.] [The KJV translates Strong's G869 in the following manner: suddenly (3x).]

c. there came [Strong: 1096 gínomai, ghin'-om-ahee; a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):—arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, × soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.] [The KJV translates Strong's G1096 in the following manner: be (255x), come to pass (82x), be made (69x), be done (63x), come (52x), become (47x), God forbid (with G3361) (15x), arise (13x), have (5x), be fulfilled (3x), be married to (3x), be preferred (3x), not translated (14x), miscellaneous (4x), vr done (2x).]

d. [a] sound [Strong: 2279 ēchos, ay'-khos; of uncertain affinity; a loud or confused noise ("echo"), i.e. roar; figuratively, a rumor:—fame, sound.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2279 in the following manner: sound (2x), fame (1x).]

e. from [Strong: 1537 ek, ek; a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote):—after, among, × are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, × hereby, + very highly, in, …ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, × thenceforth, through, × unto, × vehemently, with(-out).] [The KJV translates Strong's G1537 in the following manner: of (366x), from (181x), out of (162x), by (55x), on (34x), with (25x), miscellaneous (98x).]

f. heaven [Strong: 3772 ouranós, oo-ran-os'; perhaps from the same as G3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):—air, heaven(-ly), sky.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3772 in the following manner: heaven (268x), air (10x), sky (5x), heavenly (with G1537) (1x).]

g. as [Strong: 5618 hṓsper, hoce'-per; from G5613 and G4007; just as, i.e. exactly like:—(even, like) as.] [The KJV translates Strong's G5618 in the following manner: as (39x), even as (2x), like as (1x).]

h. [of a] rushing [Strong: 5342 phérō, fer'-o; a primary verb (for which other, and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; namely, οἴω oíō oy'-o; and ἐνέγκω enénkō en-eng'-ko; to "bear" or carry (in a very wide application, literally and figuratively, as follows):—be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come, + let her drive, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.] [The KJV translates Strong's G5342 in the following manner: bring (34x), bear (8x), bring forth (5x), come (3x), reach (2x), endure (2x), carry (1x), miscellaneous (9x).]

i. mighty [Strong: 972 bíaios, bee'-ah-yos; from G970; violent:—mighty.] [The KJV translates Strong's G972 in the following manner: mighty (1x).]

j. wind [Strong: 4157 pnoḗ, pno-ay'; from G4154; respiration, a breeze:—breath, wind.] [The KJV translates Strong's G4157 in the following manner: wind (1x), breath (1x).]

God spoke to Job out of a whirlwind (Job 38:1; 40:6); a mighty east wind dried out the path through the Red Sea, enabling the Israelites to escape from Egypt on dry ground (Exodus 14:21). Wind was also a frequent symbol of the Spirit in the Old Testament (Ezekiel 37:9, 10 and 14). Jesus also used wind to speak of the Spirit (John 3:8). The sound of wind indicated to those present that God was about to manifest Himself and His Spirit in a special way.”  

2. “...and it filled all the house where they were sitting.”

c. all [Strong: 3650 hólos, hol'-os; a primary word; "whole" or "all", i.e. complete (in extent, amount, time or degree), especially (neuter) as noun or adverb:—all, altogether, every whit, + throughout, whole.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3650 in the following manner: all (65x), whole (43x), every whit (2x), altogether (1x), throughout (with G1223) (1x).]

d. the [Strong: 3588 [ton] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

e. house [Strong: 3624  oîkos, oy'-kos; of uncertain affinity; a dwelling (more or less extensive, literal or figurative); by implication, a family (more or less related, literally or figuratively):—home, house(-hold), temple.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3624 in the following manner: house (104x), household (3x), home (with G1519) (2x), at home (with G1722) (2x), miscellaneous (3x).]

f. where [Strong: 3757 hoû, hoo; genitive case of G3739 as adverb; at which place, i.e. where:—where(-in), whither(-soever).] [The KJV translates Strong's G3757 in the following manner: where (22x), till (14x), whither (2x), when (1x), wherein (1x), whithersoever (with G1437) (1x).]

g. [they] were [Strong: 2258 ēn, ane; imperfect of G1510; I (thou, etc.) was (wast or were):—+ agree, be, X have (+ charge of), hold, use, was(-t), were.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2258 in the following manner: was (267x), were (115x), had been (12x), had (11x), taught (with G1321) (4x), stood (with G2476) (4x), miscellaneous (42x), vr was (1x).]

h. sitting [Strong: 2521 káthēmai, kath'-ay-mahee; from G2596; and ἧμαι hēmai (to sit; akin to the base of G1476); to sit down; figuratively, to remain, reside:—dwell, sit (by, down).] [The KJV translates Strong's G2521 in the following manner: sit (82x), sit down (3x), sit by (2x), be set down (1x), dwell (1x).]
