But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

1). As the letter continues Paul writes that the reason he did not need to write them of the times and seasons is because they were not in darkness that the day would take them as a thief like the rest of the world. In other words, they and we would know the times and seasons, not the day but the times and seasons.

1). The mockery that Paul endured consisted of being called names. One name he was called was a “babbler”

 

a). Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

 

b). babbler [Strong: 4691. spermologos sper-mol-og'-os from 4690 and 3004; a seed-picker (as the crow), i.e. (figuratively) a sponger, loafer (specially, a gossip or trifler in talk):--babbler.] [spermologos ; sperm-a seed; lego-to collect] [Vine: it came to be used as a noun signifying a crow, or some other bird picking up seeds. Metaphorically it became used of a man who picks up scraps of information and retails them second hand, a plagiarist, of those who make a show in unscientific lectures.] [Zodhiates: a chatterer who picks up and repeats trifling things. It is said that the Athenians applied this name to those who made their living be collecting and selling refuse they found in the market place. Therefore, they were men of no account, low and contemptible persons.]

 

2). 8/18/2011 ICR Today's verse describes the reaction of the Athenians to Paul's preaching on the resurrection. These listeners seem to have consisted mostly of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers: these were the ones who got Paul to come over to the Areopagus (near the famous Parthenon) to present his case there to an open-air gathering of curious spectators. Now these philosophers, like most of our modern philosophers, were evolutionists. The Stoics were pantheists and the Epicureans were atheists: neither believed in a personal Creator God nor in a primeval creation. Paul began his message by stressing the fact of special creation. They had been worshipping many nature gods and goddesses, but Paul insisted that they must turn to the true Creator God, who had revealed Himself in Christ and had "given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead". Paul seems here to be giving us the general pattern to follow when witnessing to people who neither know nor believe the Bible. That is, begin with the fact of creation, then climax with Christ's resurrection and the requirement to believe on Him for salvation. Paul's audience reacted much as modern skeptical audiences tend to react today. "Some mocked" and others said they would consider it later. Most went away unsaved. But "certain men clave unto him, and believed." That's the way it is today with evolutionist hearers of the message. Many will scoff and others will say they may think about it. But some will believe! HMM


3). Paul’s mention of the resurrection of Christ caused a definite disturbance among the group. Even though on the outside most were mocking the message and the messenger, there were more than a few that the Holy Ghost convicted and they believed.

1). It is unfortunate that Psalm 110:1 is split in half here, one half in Acts 2:34, the other in Acts 2:35.

2). Peter is continuing his preaching the resurrection of Christ, and he ties it to Psalms 110:1. Psalms 110:1 is the most quoted and alluded to Old Testament verse in the New Testament. Peter here is quoting Psalm 110:1. This verse is the most quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament. It is quoted or alluded to 16 times in the New Testament: Matthew 22:44; 26:64; Mark 16:19; Luke 20:42, 43; Acts 2:33-36; Romans 8:34; 1 Corinthians 15:25; Ephesians 1:20; 2:6; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:#; 1:13; 8:1; 10:12, 13; 12:2.

3). The frequency and importance of Psalm 110:1 being quoted is this: the sitting down of Christ at the right hand of God is the beginning of the establishment of the New Covenant. From this point on, the New Covenant is given, beginning with the out pouring of the Holy Ghost.

1. “This Jesus hath God raised up…”

1). This Greek word is used in literal or figurative ways. Here in Acts 2:32, as the context and verses surrounding it clearly verify, it is referring to the resurrection of Christ. It is also used in a meaning that is referring to Christ place in the plan of God.

a). Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

b). Acts 13:23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus.

1). The Amplified Bible says it best. David says because of this revelation the he “will encamp, pitch its tent, and dwell in hope in anticipation of the resurrection”.

2). Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians deals extensively with the resurrection Christ Jesus and the hope it should put in our hearts.

a). 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15:15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

1). Prophetic passages that refer to Christ Jesus during his suffering the pains of death in hell before they were loosed when the sin debt was paid and we were declared righteous and He was raised from the dead. The pains of death and comparative Old Testament verses.


a). Psalm 18:4-6 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

18:5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

1). After the sin debt was paid it was not possible for the pains of death to continue to hold Him because it was our sin that took Him there. Once the sin penalty was paid death could no longer hold Him.


a). Isaiah 53:9-11 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

53:10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.


2). Only a few translations put it in the light that Christ Jesus was raised after the penalty was paid. When we were declared righteous Jesus came out of the ground.


a). Romans 4:25 [YLT] who was delivered up because of our offences, and was raised up because of our being declared righteous.


b). Romans 4:25 [NASB] He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.


c). Romans 4:25 [NKJV] who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
