1). This is an interesting prophecy Jesus
stated, because under the Old Covenant they were required to flog or scourge a
trouble maker.
a). Deuteronomy 25:1-3 If there be a controversy between men, and
they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall
justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
25:2 And it shall be, if the wicked
man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to
be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
25:3 Forty stripes he may give him,
and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many
stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
2). The Apostle Paul received this
punishment 5 times. There is no record of this in Scripture other than Paul’s
word that it happened.
a). 2 Corinthians 11:24 Of the Jews
five times received I forty stripes save one.
b). Personally, I believe most of
these beatings occurred in the years immediately following his conversion when
he preached Christ Jesus in the synagogues of Syria and Cilicia, probably soon
after accepting Christ.
c). Galatians 1:21-24 Afterwards I
came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;
1:22 And was unknown by face unto the
churches of Judaea which were in Christ:
1:23 But they had heard only, That he
which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he
destroyed.
1:24 And they glorified God in me.
