Matthew 10:18

Matthew 10:18

And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

a. NLT: You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.

b. NIV: On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.

c. YLT: and before governors and kings ye shall be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.

d. Amplified Bible: And you will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a witness to bear testimony before them and to the Gentiles (the nations).

e. Worrell Translation: and before the governors and the kings ye shall be brought for My sake, for a testimony to them and to the gentiles.

1. “And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake…”

a. and [3225 * kai] [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. ye shall be brought [71 * ago] [Strong: a primary verb; properly, to lead; by implication, to bring, drive, (reflexively) go, (specially) pass (time), or (figuratively) induce:--be, bring (forth), carry, (let) go, keep, lead away, be open.]

c. before [1909 * epi] [Strong: a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. In compounds it retains essentially the same import, at, upon, etc. (literally or figuratively).]

d. governors [2232 * hegemon] [Strong: from 2233; a leader, i.e. chief person (or figuratively, place) of a province:--governor, prince, ruler.]

e. and [2532 * kai] See “and” above.

f. and [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

g. kings [935 * basileus] [Strong:  probably from 939 (through the notion of a foundation of power); a sovereign (abstractly, relatively, or figuratively):--king.]

h. for my [1752 * heneka or heneken hen'-ek-en or Heineken] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; on account of:--because, for (cause, sake), (where-)fore, by reason of, that.]

i. sake [1700 * emou] [Strong:  a prolonged form of 3449; of me:--me, mine, my.]

2. “…for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.”

a. for [1519 * eis] [Strong: a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).]

b. a testimony [3142 * marturion] [Strong: neuter of a presumed derivative of 3144; something evidential, i.e. (genitive case) evidence given or (specially), the Decalogue (in the sacred Tabernacle):--to be testified, testimony, witness.]

1). The King James Version is the only translation that adds the word “against” directed toward the kings, the governors and the Gentiles. There is no such word in the text. I like the NLT that says, “But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.” I believe this is the spirit of the Scripture.

c. them [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

d. and [3225 * kai] [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. the Gentiles [1484 * ethnos] [Strong: probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

1). There are tens of thousands of examples of persecution in Christian literature recorded from the beginnings of Christianity. As I write there is horrible persecution in the Middle East at the hands of Islam, thousands of believers being beheaded and recorded in video and published on the internet.

2). America for the most part has been free of most kinds of persecution for many years, but in America now and in Canada, a dark satanic presence has been given place in our nations and is beginning to persecute believers preaching the truth of freedom from sexual immorality. Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:12 “that all who will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” We are just beginning to see it manifested.

a).  SAMARITAN’S PURSE STARTS FUND TO HELP CHRISTIAN BAKERS
Last Friday, Christian bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein were ordered to pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple for the “severe emotional trauma” they experienced when the Kleins politely refused to bake a cake for their same-sex wedding. That’s $135,000 that could and should be used to pay their mortgage and feed their children. In just 8 hours, $109,000 of that was raised on GoFundMe—and then the campaign was shut down. Why?
When a rival bakery complained about the fundraising campaign, saying it violated GoFundMe’s terms of service, the online fundraising company shut down the campaign.
“This business has been found GUILTY OF DISCRIMINATION and is being allowed to fundraise to pay their penalty. The gofundme terms of service address hate speech, bigotry, criminal activity and sexism among other things in their campaign … The amount of money they have raised in a matter of a few hours by thousands of anonymous cowards is disgusting.” — Lisa Watson of Cupcake Jones, a competitor of Sweet Cakes by Melissa
The campaign closure was the final insult in a struggle that’s been ongoing for two years. In 2013, the Kleins were forced to sell their bakery after a civil rights complaint filed against them by Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman. In spite of an apology from the Kleins, Cryer and Bowman proceeded with their suit which included a list of 178 symptoms they experienced after being denied a cake by the Kleins.
Franklin Graham has stepped up to help Aaron and Melissa Klein by opening a fund through Samaritan’s Purse. “They have taken a stand for the Word of God, and they should not have to stand alone,” Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham said. “I believe that Christians across our nation will rally around Aaron and Melissa and their five children. Author Michal Brown explains it best: “This whole episode exposes the moral bankruptcy of the contemporary attack on Bible-believing Christians, first, with the state requiring the Kleins to violate their religious beliefs, second, by blaming them for a ridiculous list of traumas, third, by fining them such an exorbitant amount of money, and fourth, by shutting down the caring campaign meant to help them.”
