1. “And onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod, and for the breastplate.”

a. [And onyx [Strong: 7718 shoham sho'-ham from an unused root probably mean to blanch; a gem, probably the beryl (from its pale green color):--onyx.]

b. stones [Strong: 68 'eben eh'-ben from the root of 1129 through the meaning to build; a stone:--+ carbuncle, + mason, + plummet, (chalk-, hail-, head-, sling-)stone(-ny), (divers) weight(-s).]

1). From Exodus 35:4 through Exodus 35:9 is the list of the freewill offerings the LORD instructed Moses to request from the children of Israel.

2). J. Vernon Mcgee: The question is repeatedly asked, “Where did the children of israel get the different articles they gave to the tabernacle when they had been slaves in Egypt? Remember that God said that they would come out of Egypt with great wealth (Genesis 15:14). He made sure they collected their back wages. The Egyptians were so glad to rid the land of the Israelites that they gave them whatever they asked. So israel left with a great deal of the wealth of Egypt.

3). First mention of it was in the vision given to Abraham during the Covenant of the parts.

a). Genesis 15:12-14 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

4). The next reference was in the original call of Moses at the burning bush.

a). Exodus 3:20-22  And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.

3:20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.

3:21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty.

3:22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.

5). The last reference is during the Exodus. When every firstborn of the Egyptians died, which included every home (Exodus 12:30), the Egyptians were terrified and gave the Israelites whatever wealth they asked for because they believed if they didn’t comp[ly they would all be dead.

a). Exodus 12:33-36 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.

12:34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

12:35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

12:36 And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

6). The amount of wealth that the people of Israel left with was more than enough to build the Tabernacle worthy of God from freewill offerings and have enough left for themselves. The generosity of the people was so great that they had to tell the people to stop giving, because they had more than enough.

a). Exodus 36:3-7 And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it withal. And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning.

36:4 And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they made;

36:5 And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the Lord commanded to make.

36:6 And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.

36:7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
