Daniel 12:10
Many
shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly:
and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
a. NLT: Many
will be purified, cleansed, and refined by these trials. But the wicked will
continue in their wickedness, and none of them will understand. Only those who
are wise will know what it means.
b. NIV: Many
will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be
wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will
understand.
c. YLT: Purify
themselves, yea, make themselves white, yea, refined are many: and the wicked
have done wickedly, and none of the wicked understand, and those acting wisely
do understand;
d.
Amplified Bible: Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be
tried, smelted, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly.
And none of the wicked shall understand, but the teachers and those
who are wise shall understand.
e.
Septuagint: Many must be tested, and thoroughly whitened, and tried with fire,
and sanctified; but the transgressors shall transgress: and none of the
transgressors shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: They will be elucidated and clarified and
redefined by many [people]; the wicked will act wickedly, and none of the
wicked will understand; but the wise will understand.
1.
“Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried…”
a. many
[7227 * rab] [Strong: contracted from 7231; abundant (in quantity, size,
age, number, rank, quality):--(in) abound(-undance, -ant, -antly), captain,
elder, enough, exceedingly, full, great(-ly, man, one), increase, long (enough,
(time)), (do, have) many(-ifold, things, a time), ((ship-))master, mighty,
more, (too, very) much, multiply(-tude), officer, often(-times), plenteous,
populous, prince, process (of time), suffice(-lent).]
b. shall
be purified [1305 * barar] [Strong: a primitive root; to clarify (i.e.
brighten), examine, select:--make bright, choice, chosen, cleanse (be clean),
clearly, polished, (shew self) pure(-ify), purge (out).]
1). Under
the Old and New Covenants there are kinds of purification, some are spiritual
and others ceremonial and sometimes they intersect. Under the New Covenant the
second coming of Christ will produce in the believer a holy desire to be pure
in their lives before Him. The initial cleansing comes only from the
forgiveness that only God can do through Christ Jesus at the cross through the
born again experience. In our relationship with Him, as we draw nigh to him,
co-laboring with him only through His grace we can make ourselves pure in our
obedience.
a). 1
John 3:1-3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that
we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not,
because it knew him not.
3:2 Beloved,
now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we
know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as
he is.
3:3 And
every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
b). 2
Timothy 2:15-21Study
to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.
2:16 But
shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2:17 And
their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2:18 Who
concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already;
and overthrow the faith of some.
2:19 Nevertheless
the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them
that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
2:20 But
in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of
wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
2:21 If a
man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour,
sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
c. and
made white [3835 * laban] [Strong: a primitive root; to be (or become) white;
also (as denominative from 3843) to make bricks:--make brick, be (made,
make) white(-r).]
1). The
above statement concerning being “purified” applies also to being “made white”.
a).
Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the
marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
19:8 And
to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white:
for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
d. and
tried [6884 * tsaraph] [Strong: a primitive root; to fuse (metal), i.e. refine
(literally or figuratively):--cast, (re-)fine(-er), founder, goldsmith, melt,
pure, purge away, try.]
1). Any
material that is to be used must be tested before use.
a). James
1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall
into divers temptations;
1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
1:4 But
let patience have her perfect
work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
b). 1
Peter 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it
be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the
appearing of Jesus Christ:
c).
Revelation 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and
white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with
eye salve, that thou mayest see.
2.
“…but the wicked shall do wickedly…”
a. the
wicked [7563 * rasha’] [Strong: from 7661; morally wrong; concretely, an
(actively) bad person:--+ condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did
wrong.]
b. shall
do wickedly [7561 * rasha’] [Strong: a primitive root; to be (causatively, do
or declare) wrong; by implication, to disturb, violate:--condemn, make trouble,
vex, be (commit, deal, depart, do) wicked(-ly, -ness).]
3.
“…and none of the wicked shall understand…”
a. the
wicked [7563 * rasha’] [Strong: from 7661; morally wrong; concretely, an
(actively) bad person:--+ condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did
wrong.]
1). There
is no Hebrew word for “none” in the text. All of the English translations
including Young’s Literal Translation and even the English translation of the
Septuagint all insert the English word “none” into their translations. I trust
their judgement. I feel they were reflecting correctly that there is in the
text, an implied distinction between “the wicked” and “the wise”. One would not
“understand” while the other does.
b. shall
understand [995 * biyn] [Strong: a primitive root; to separate mentally (or
distinguish), i.e.(generally) understand:--attend, consider, be cunning,
diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have
intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can)
skill(-full), teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand(-ing),
view, (deal) wise(-ly, man).]
4.
“…but the wise shall understand.”
a. the
wise [7919 * sakal] [Strong: a primitive root; to separate mentally (or
distinguish), i.e.(generally) understand:--attend, consider, be cunning,
diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have
intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can)
skill(-full), teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand(-ing),
view, (deal) wise(-ly, man).]

intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can)
