Hebrews 9:27

Hebrews 9:27

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

a. NLT: And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,

b. NIV: Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

c. YLT: and as it is laid up to men once to die, and after this -- judgment,

d. Amplified Bible: And just as it is appointed for [all] men once to die, and after that the [certain] judgment,

e. Worrell Translation: And in as much as it is appointed  to men once to die, but after this comes judgment;

1. And as it is appointed unto men once to die

a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. as [2596 * kata] [Strong: a primary particle; (prepositionally) down (in place or time), in varied relations (according to the case (genitive, dative or accusative) with which it is joined):--about, according as (to), after, against, (when they were) X alone, among, and, X apart, (even, like) as (concerning, pertaining to touching), X aside, at, before, beyond, by, to the charge of, (charita-)bly, concerning, + covered, (dai-)ly, down, every, (+ far more) exceeding, X more excellent, for, from ... to, godly, in(-asmuch, divers, every, -to, respect of), ... by, after the manner of, + by any means, beyond (out of) measure, X mightily, more, X natural, of (up-)on (X part), out (of every), over against, (+ your) X own, + particularly, so, through(-oughout, -oughout every), thus, (un-)to(-gether, -ward), X uttermost, where(-by), with. In composition it retains many of these applications, and frequently denotes opposition, distribution, or intensity.]

1). [3745 * hosos] [Strong: by reduplication from 3739; as (much, great, long, etc.) as:--all (that), as (long, many, much) (as), how great (many, much), (in-)asmuch as, so many as, that (ever), the more, those things, what (great, -soever), wheresoever, wherewithsoever, which, X while, who(-soever).]

c. it is appointed [606 * apokeimai] [Strong: from 575 and 2749; to be reserved; figuratively, to await:--be appointed, (be) laid up.]

1). World Outreach Church Daily Devotional 11/5/11 Some people think there’s an appointed time to die, and when that time comes the person dies. But that’s wrong thinking, and it leaves the door open to the devil. This verse doesn’t say there’s an appointed time to die. It says it is appointed unto man to die once. I heard someone say, “It’s appointed unto man once to die, but we don’t have to let the devil set the appointment.” The apostle Paul said in Philippians 1:23-24, “For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.” In other words, Paul was saying, “I haven’t decided yet whether to go or stay.” He was writing from prison, and they were ready to take his head off. Yet Paul was saying he hadn’t decided whether to go or stay—as though he had a choice. Paul did have a choice. Later in his writings, he said, “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:6,7). He left when he was good and ready—and that was when he’d finished his course. You should desire to do the same. Dare to believe God for a long, satisfying life. Determine in your heart you won’t leave this earth until you can say with confidence, “I’ve finished my course!”

d. unto men [444 * Anthropos] [Strong: from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]

e. once [530 * hapax] [Strong: probably from 537; one (or a single) time (numerically or conclusively):--once.]

f. to die [599 * apothnesko] [Strong: from 575 and 2348; to die off (literally or figuratively):--be dead, death, die, lie a-dying, be slain (X with).]
1). This is not a doctrinal statement that everyman will die only once, for some in fact have died more than once.

a). Luke 7:11-15; John 11:43, 44.

2). This is a doctrinal statement that every man will die at least once.

2. “…but after this the judgment.”

a. but [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. after [3326 * meta] [Strong: a primary preposition (often used adverbially); properly, denoting accompaniment; "amid" (local or causal); modified variously according to the case (genitive association, or accusative succession) with which it is joined; occupying an intermediate position between 575 or 1537 and 1519 or 4314; less intimate than 1722 and less close than 4862):--after(-ward), X that he again, against, among, X and, + follow, hence, hereafter, in, of, (up-)on, + our, X and setting, since, (un-)to, + together, when, with (+ -out). Often used in composition, in substantially the same relations of participation or proximity, and transfer or sequence.]

c. this [5124 * touto] [Strong: neuter singular nominative or accusative case of 3778; that thing:--here (-unto), it, partly, self(-same), so, that (intent), the same, there(-fore, -unto), this, thus, where(-fore).]

d. the judgment [2920 * krisis] [Strong: decision (subjectively or objectively, for or against); by extension, a tribunal; by implication, justice (especially, divine law):--accusation, condemnation, damnation, judgment.]
