1 Corinthians 11:31

1 Corinthians 11:31

For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

a. NLT: But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way.

b. NIV: But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.

c. YLT: for if ourselves we were discerning, we would not be being judged,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

e. Worrell Translation: But, if we discerned ourselves, we would not be judged.

1. “For if we would judge ourselves…”

a. For [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. if [1487 * ei] [Strong: a primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that, etc.:--forasmuch as, if, that, (al-)though, whether. Often used in connection or composition with other particles, especially as in 1489, 1490, 1499, 1508, 1509, 1512, 1513, 1536, 1537.]

c. we would judge [1452 * diakrino] [Strong: from 1223 and 2919; to separate thoroughly, i.e. (literally and reflexively) to withdraw from, or (by implication) oppose; figuratively, to discriminate (by implication, decide), or (reflexively) hesitate:--contend, make (to) differ(-ence), discern, doubt, judge, be partial, stagger, waver.]

d. ourselves [1438 * heautou] [Strong: from a reflexive pronoun otherwise obsolete and the genitive case (dative case or accusative case) of 846; him- (her-, it-, them-, also (in conjunction with the personal pronoun of the other persons) my-, thy-, our-, your-) self (selves), etc.:--alone, her (own, -self), (he) himself, his (own), itself, one (to) another, our (thine) own(-selves), + that she had, their (own, own selves), (of) them(-selves), they, thyself, you, your (own, own conceits, own selves, -selves).]

2. “…we should not be judged.”

a. we should [302 * an] [Strong: a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.]

b. not [3756 * ou; also (before a vowel) ouk; and (before an aspirate) ouch] [Strong: a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

c. be judged [2919 * krino] [Strong: properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide (mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish:--avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.]

1). The being “judged” is clearly being weak, sick and early death, but it can be avoided by judging ourselves and repenting and of sin and living whole heartedly for Christ.
