Galatians 5:17
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other:
so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
a. NLT: The sinful
nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants.
And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature
desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not
free to carry out your good intentions.
b. NIV: For the
flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary
to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do
whatever you want.
c. YLT: for the
flesh doth desire contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit contrary to the flesh,
and these are opposed one to another, that the things that ye may will -- these
ye may not do;
d. Amplified Bible
Classic: For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the
[desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for
these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict
with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented
from doing what you desire to do.
e. Worrell
Translation: For the flesh covets against the spirit, and the spirit against
the flesh; for these are contrary one to the other, that ye may not do the
things which ye wish.

hos; including feminine he; and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a
primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes
demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some,
that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

[Strong: a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or
uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except
by the subjunctive or potential mood.]
g. ye would [2309 *
thelo; or ethelo; in certain tenses theleo; and etheleo] [Strong: which are
otherwise obsolete apparently strengthened from the alternate form of 138; to
determine (as an active option from subjective impulse; whereas 1014 properly
denotes rather a passive acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose
or prefer (literally or figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be
inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense,
to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in:--desire, be disposed (forward),
intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, -
ling(-ly)).]
1). Here is the
law of sin and death described: you cannot do the things that you would.
1). Romans 7:14-25
For we know that the
law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
7:15 For that
which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that
do I.
7:16 If then I do
that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
7:17 Now then it
is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:18 For I know
that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is
present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
7:19 For the good
that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
7:20 Now if I do
that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:21 I find then a
law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
7:22 For I delight
in the law of God after the inward man:
7:23 But I see
another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me
into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
7:24 O wretched
man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
7:25 I thank God
through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of
God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
2). The battle
between the spirit and the flesh can only be won by the spirit through the
grace of God provided in the born again experience. This in essence is what is
stated in the beginning verses of Romans 8.
a). Romans 8:1-3 There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk
not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of
the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and
death.
8:3 For what the
law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
b). Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth
salvation hath appeared to all men,
2:12 Teaching us that,
denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and
godly, in this present world;
2:13 Looking for
that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ;
2:14 Who gave
himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto
himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
