Galatians 5:1
Stand fast therefore in the liberty
wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of
bondage.
a. NLT: So Christ
has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up
again in slavery to the law.
b. NIV: It is for
freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let
yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
c. YLT: In the
freedom, then, with which Christ did make you free -- stand ye, and be not held
fast again by a yoke of servitude;
d. Amplified Bible
Classic: In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated
us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and
submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].
e. Worrell
Translation: For freedom did Christ make us free; stand fast, therefore, and be
not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.
1. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty
wherewith Christ hath made us free…”
a. stand fast
[4739 * steko] [Strong: from the perfect tense of 2476; to be stationary, i.e.
(figuratively) to persevere:--stand (fast).]
b. therefore [3767
* oun] [Strong: apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or
(conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise
then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]
c. in the liberty
[1657 * eleutheria] [Strong: from 1658; freedom (legitimate or licentious,
chiefly moral or ceremonial):--liberty.]
d. wherewith [3739
* hos; including feminine he; and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a
primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes
demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some,
that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]
e. Christ [5547 *
Christos] [Strong: from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of
Jesus:--Christ.
f. hath made…free [1659
* eleuthero] [Strong: from 1658; to liberate, i.e. (figuratively) to exempt
(from moral, ceremonial or mortal liability):--deliver, make free.]
g. us [2248 * hemas]
[Strong: accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]
1). The liberty
and freedom that we are to stand fast and remain in is liberty from the bondage
of sin.
a). Romans 8:1-3 There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk
not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of
the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and
death.
8:3 For what the
law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
2. “…and
be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
a. and [2532 *
kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes
also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in
connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also,
both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. be…entangled [1758
* enecho] [Strong: from 1722 and 2192; to hold in or upon, i.e. ensnare; by
implication, to keep a grudge:--entangle with, have a quarrel against, urge.
c. not [3361 * me]
[Strong: a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an
absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative
implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one))
whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither,
never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken),
without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]
d. again [3825 * palin]
[Strong: probably from the same as 3823 (through the idea of oscillatory
repetition); (adverbially) anew, i.e. (of place) back, (of time) once more, or
(conjunctionally) furthermore or on the other hand:--again.]
e. with the yoke
[2218 * zugos] [Strong: from the root of zeugnumi (to join, especially by a
"yoke"); a coupling, i.e. (figuratively) servitude (a law or
obligation); also (literally) the beam of the balance (as connecting the
scales):--pair of balances, yoke.]
1). The yoke of
Christ is easy and light.
a). Matthew 11:28-30
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I
will give you rest.
11:29 Take my yoke
upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find
rest unto your souls.
11:30 For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.
f. of bondage [1397
* douleia] [Strong: rom 1398; slavery (ceremonially or figuratively):--bondage.]
1). Through
disobedience we can place ourselves back into bondage, it is our choice to
remain untangled and become tangled again in bondage.
a). Romans 6:16-18
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield
yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of
sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
6:17 But God be
thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart
that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
6:18 Being then
made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
