1 Corinthians 11:32
But
when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be
condemned with the world.
a. NLT: Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so
that we will not be condemned along with the world.
b. NIV: Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we
are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
c. YLT: and being judged by the Lord, we are chastened, that with the
world we may not be condemned;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: But when we [fall
short and] are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined and chastened,
so that we may not [finally] be condemned [to eternal punishment along] with
the world.
e. Worrell Translation: but, being judged; we are chastened by the
Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
1.
“But when we are judged…”
a. But [1161 * de]
[Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and,
etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]
b. when we are
judged [2919 * krino] [Strong: properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide
(mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish:--avenge,
conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the)
law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.]
2.
“…we are chastened of the Lord…”
a. we are
chastened [3811 * paideuo] [Strong: from 3816; to train up a child, i.e.
educate, or (by implication), discipline (by punishment):--chasten(-ise),
instruct, learn, teach.]
b. of [5259 *
hupo] [Strong: a primary preposition; under, i.e. (with the genitive case) of
place (beneath), or with verbs (the agency or means, through); (with the
accusative case) of place (whither (underneath) or where (below) or time (when
(at)):--among, by, from, in, of, under, with. In the comparative, it retains
the same general applications, especially of inferior position or condition,
and specially, covertly or moderately.]
c. the Lord [2962
* kurios] [Strong: from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun)
controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord,
master, Sir.]
1). Dake: If we
will thus judge ourselves and have faith in the work of Christ on the cross, we
shall not have to suffer or go without the benefits provided for us. If we will
not do this, then we will have to reap what we sow. If we judge any sin
committed, ask forgiveness, and put it away, then we are not chastened by God.
If we refuse to judge ourselves, then He judges by chastening, (1 Corinthians
11:31, 32)
2). It is said
that God chastens His children Hebrews 12:5-10.
a). Albert Barnes Commentary:
The design of God's correcting his children is, that they should be
"reclaimed," and not "destroyed."
3). My opinion: God
has designed all these spiritual laws in the creation. Although it says we are “chastened
of the Lord” by becoming weak, sick, and suffering premature death when we
violate communion commandments; it is not God directly making people sick or
killing them. Rather it is the spiritual laws that he has designed and
implemented concerning communion to ensure His word is fulfilled if we knowingly
violate those commands. Because God is the divine administrator of the universe,
it is said we are chastened of the Lord. I believe a similar passage is found
earlier in the first Corinthian letter concerning Church discipline regarding
an individual committing fornication.
a). 1 Corinthians
5:1-5 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such
fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have
his father's wife.
5:2 And ye are
puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might
be taken away from among you.
5:3 For I verily,
as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were
present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
5:4 In the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the
power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:5 To deliver
such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be
saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
b). Ideally, this
discipline is to result in repentance and in the case Paul writes about in 1
Corinthians 5, the individual did repent, 2 Corinthians 2:1-9.
3.
“…that we should not be condemned with the world.”
a. that…not [3363
* hina me] [Strong: 2443 and 3361; in order (or so) that not:--albeit not,
lest, that, no(-t, (-thing)).]
b. we should…be
condemned [2632 * katakrino] [Strong: from 2596 and 2919; to judge against,
i.e. sentence:--condemn, damn.]
c. with [4862 *
sun] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much
closer than 3326 or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process,
resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:--beside, with. In
composition it has similar applications, including completeness.]
d. the world [2889
* kosmos] [Strong: probably from the base of 2865; orderly arrangement, i.e.
decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its
inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)):--adorning, world.]
