Galatians 4:31

Galatians 4:31

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

a. NLT: So, dear brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman; we are children of the free woman.

b. NIV: Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

c. YLT: then, brethren, we are not a maid-servant's children, but the free-woman's.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: So, brethren, we [who are born again] are not children of a slave woman [the natural], but of the free [the supernatural].

e. Worrell Translation: Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a bond-woman, but of the free-woman.

1. “So then, brethren…”

a. So then [686 * ara] [Strong: probably from 142 (through the idea of drawing a conclusion); a particle denoting an inference more or less decisive (as follows):--haply, (what) manner (of man), no doubt, perhaps, so be, then, therefore, truly, wherefore. Often used in connection with other particles, especially 1065 or 3767 (after) or 1487 (before).]

b. brethren [80 * adelphos] [Strong: from G1 (as a connective particle) and δελφύς delphýs (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like G1):—brother.]

2. “…we are not children of the bondwoman…”

a. we are [2070 * semen] [Strong: first person plural indicative of 1510; we are:--are, be, have our being, X have hope, + (the gospel) was (preached unto) us.]

b. not [3756 * ou; also (before a vowel) ouk; and (before an aspirate) ouch] [Strong: a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

c. children [5043 * teknon] [Strong: from the base of 5098; a child (as produced):--child, daughter, son.]

d. of the bondwoman [3814 * paidiske] [Strong: feminine diminutive of 3816; a girl, i.e. (specially), a female slave or servant:--bondmaid(-woman), damsel, maid(-en).]

3. “…but of the free.”

a. but [235 * alla] [Strong: [235 * alla] [Strong: neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. of the free [1658 * eleutheros] [Strong: probably from the alternate of 2064; unrestrained (to go at pleasure), i.e. (as a citizen) not a slave (whether freeborn or manumitted), or (genitive case) exempt (from obligation or liability):--free (man, woman), at liberty.]

1). As stated above in the previous verse that the freedom referred to is freedom form the law and the flesh.

a). Galatians 5:13-18  For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
