Galatians 4:22

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

a. NLT: The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave wife and one from his freeborn wife.

b. NIV: For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.

c. YLT: for it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondmaid and one by the free woman.

e. Worrell Translation: For it has been written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bond-woman, and on by the free-woman.

1. “For it is written…”

a. For [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):—and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. it is written [1125 * grapho] [Strong:  a primary verb; to "grave", especially to write; figuratively, to describe:—describe, write(-ing, -ten).]

1). Paul is appealing to the Scripture in the same way that Jesus did.

a). Matthew 4:3-10 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
4:9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

2). Paul did also in Romans.

a). Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
