Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the
Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
a. NLT: So I say,
let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful
nature craves.
b. NIV: So I say,
walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
c. YLT: And I say:
In the Spirit walk ye, and the desire of the flesh ye may not complete;
d. Amplified Bible
Classic: But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy]
Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by
the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires
of the flesh (of human nature without God).
e. Worrell
Translation: But I say, walk by the Spirit, and ye will not fulfill the desire
of the flesh.
1. “This I say then…”
a. I say [3004 *
lego] [Strong: a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e.
(figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse;
whereas 2036 and 5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech
respectively; while 4483 is properly to break silence merely, and 2980 means an
extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:--ask, bid, boast, call,
describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]
b. then [1161 *
de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and,
etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]
2. “…Walk in the Spirit…”
a. walk [4043 * peripateo]
[Strong: from 4012 and 3961; to tread all around, i.e. walk at large
(especially as proof of ability); figuratively, to live, deport oneself, follow
(as a companion or votary):--go, be occupied with, walk (about).] [Vine: "to
walk," is sometimes used of the state in which one is living, or of that
to which a person is given.]
1). Albert Barnes
Commentary: The Christian life is often represented as a journey, and the word
walk, in the scripture, is often equivalent to live.
2). Vincent Word
Studies: Frequent in a metaphorical sense for habitual conduct.
3). Scripture that
uses this terminology:
a). Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the
man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of
sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
b). Psalm 56:13 For
thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou
delivermy feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
c). Psalm 84:11 For
the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and
glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
d). Romans 13:13 Let
us walk honestly, as
in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness,
not in strife and envying.
b. the Spirit
[4151 * pneuma] [Strong: from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a
breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul,
(by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an
angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life,
spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]
1). The two Books
that focus the most on the opposites of the flesh (man’s carnal nature) and the
Spirit are Romans and Galatians.
a). Romans 8:1-14 There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk
not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of
the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and
death.
8:3 For what the
law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the
righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the
flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:5 For they that
are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after
the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
8:6 For to be
carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
8:7 Because the
carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God,
neither indeed can be.
8:8 So then they
that are in the flesh cannot please God.
8:9 But ye are not
in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
8:10 And if Christ
be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of
righteousness.
8:11 But if the
Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised
up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit
that dwelleth in you.
8:12 Therefore,
brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
8:13 For if ye
live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the
deeds of the body, ye shall live.
8:14 For as many
as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
b). Galatians
5:16-26 This I say
then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
5:17 For the flesh
lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are
contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
5:18 But if ye be
led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
5:19 Now the works
of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lasciviousness,
5:20 Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
5:21 Envyings,
murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you
before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things
shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
5:22 But the fruit
of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
5:23 Meekness,
temperance: against such there is no law.
5:24 And they that
are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
5:25 If we live in
the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
5:26 Let us not be
desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
2). As believers
we must realize that with every thought, word and deed we are either sowing to
the flesh or the Spirit. We must, by the grace of God eliminate sowing to our
flesh and maximize sowing to the Spirit with our spirit.
a). Galatians 6:7-9
Be not deceived; God
is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
6:8 For he that
soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to
the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
6:9 And let us not
be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
3. “…and ye shall not fulfil the lust of
the flesh.”
a. and [2532 *
kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes
also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in
connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also,
both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
b. you shall…fulfill
[5955 * teleo] [Strong: from 5056; to end, i.e. complete, execute, conclude,
discharge (a debt):--accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish, go over,
pay, perform.
c. not [3364 * ou
me] [Strong: 3756 and 3361; a double negative strengthening the denial; not at
all:--any more, at all, by any (no) means, neither, never, no (at all), in no
case (wise), nor ever, not (at all, in any wise).]
d. the lusts [1939
* epithumia] [Strong: from 1937; a longing (especially for what is
forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).]
e. of the flesh
[4561 * sarx] [Strong: probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of
the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension)
the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is
external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with
its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human
being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]
