Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and
of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart.
a. NLT: For the word of God is alive and powerful.
It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and
spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and
desires.
b. NIV: For the word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and
spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
c. YLT: For the reckoning of God is living, and
working, and sharp above every two-edged sword, and piercing unto the dividing
asunder both of soul and spirit, of joints also and marrow, and a discerner of
thoughts and intents of the heart;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: For
the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active,
operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating to the dividing line of the [g]breath
of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the
deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and
judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.
e. Worrell Translation: For the word of God is
living, and effectual, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even
to a dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is a discerner
of thoughts and intents of the heart.
f. Wuest Translation: For actively alive is the
word of God, and energetic, and sharper than any two-edged sword, going through
even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a
sifter and analyzer of the reflections and conceptions of the heart.

k. twoedged [Strong: 1366 distomos dis'-tom-os
from 1364 and 4750; double-edged:--with two edges, two-edged.]
1). The word two edged is only use 4 times in
Scripture. Two of those instances are referring to Jesus Christ, here in
Hebrews and another in Revelation.
a). a). Revelation 1:10-16 I was in the Spirit on
the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and
the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven
churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos,
and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with
me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one
like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt
about the paps with a golden girdle.
1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool,
as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they
burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and
out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the
sun shineth in his strength.
l. sword [Strong: 3162 machaira makh'-ahee-rah
probably feminine of a presumed derivative of 3163; a knife, i.e. dirk;
figuratively, war, judicial punishment:--sword.]
1). In referring to Jesus Christ the twoedged sword
also refers to His authority with which he will rule the world.
a). Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a
sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them
with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath
of Almighty God.
b). Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall he
judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall
smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips
shall he slay the wicked.
2. “…piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit…”
a. piercing [Strong:1338 diikneomai dee-ik-neh'-om-ahee
from 1223 and the base of 2425; to reach through, i.e. penetrate:--pierce.]
b. even to [Strong: 891 achri akh'-ree
or achris akh'-rece; akin to 206 (through the idea of a terminus); (of time)
until or (of place) up to:--as far as, for, in(-to), till, (even, un-)to,
until, while.]
c. the dividing asunder [Strong: 3311 merismos
mer-is-mos' from 3307; a separation or distribution:--dividing asunder,
gift.]
d. of soul [Strong: 5590 psuche psoo-khay'
from 5594; breath, i.e. (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the
animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from 4151,
which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from 2222, which is
mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively
to the Hebrew 5315, 7307 and 2416):--heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, +
you.]
e. and [Strong: 5037 te, the; a primary particle
(enclitic) of connection or addition; both or also (properly, as correlation of
2532):--also, and, both, even, then, whether. Often used in composition,
usually as the latter participle.]
f. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
g. spirit [Strong: 4151 pneuma pnyoo'-mah
from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or
figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital
principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or
(divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual,
-ually), mind.]
1). The spirit and the soul are not the same
because they can be divided, they can be separated. Man of course consists of
three parts. Spirit, soul, and body.
a). 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace
sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body
be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. “…and of the joints and marrow…”
a. and [Strong: 5037 te, the; a primary particle
(enclitic) of connection or addition; both or also (properly, as correlation of
2532):--also, and, both, even, then, whether. Often used in composition,
usually as the latter participle.]
b. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
c. of the joints [Strong: 719 harmos har-mos'
from the same as 716; an articulation (of the body):--joint.]
d. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
e. marrow [Strong: 3452 muelos moo-el-os'
perhaps a primary word; the marrow:--marrow.]
4. “…and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the
heart.”
a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even,
for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. [is a] discerner [Strong: 2924 kritikos krit-ee-kos'
from 2923; decisive ("critical"), i.e. discriminative:--discerner.]
c. [of the] thoughts [Strong: 1761 enthumesis
en-thoo'-may-sis from 1760; deliberation:--device, thought.]
d. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
e. intents [Strong: 1771 ennoia en'-noy-ah
from a compound of 1722 and 3563; thoughtfulness, i.e. moral
understanding:--intent, mind.]
f. of the heart [Strong: 2588 kardia kar-dee'-ah
prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, "heart"); the heart, i.e.
(figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the
middle:--(+ broken-)heart(-ed).]
1). The line of revelation continues into the end
of the chapter showing that the “word of God” is none other than Christ Jesus.
