Proverbs 31:5



Proverbs 31:5

Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

a. NLT: For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.

b. NIV: Lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.

c. YLT: Lest he drink, and forget the decree, And change the judgment of any of the sons of affliction.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Lest they drink and forget the law and what it decrees, and pervert the justice due any of the afflicted.          

e. Septuagint [The Septuagint relocates Proverbs 30:15-31:9 to the end of Proverbs 24]: Lest they drink, and forget wisdom, and not be able to judge the poor rightly.

1. “Lest they drink, and forget the law…”

a. Lest [Strong: 6435 pen pane; from 6437; properly, removal; used only (in the construction) adverb as conjunction, lest:--(lest) (peradventure), that...not.]

b. they drink [Strong: 8354 shathah shaw-thaw'; a primitive root; to imbibe (literally or figuratively):--X assuredly, banquet, X certainly, drink(-er, -ing), drunk (X -ard), surely. (Prop. intensive of 8248.)]

c. and forget [Strong: 7911 shakach shaw-kakh' or shakeach {shaw-kay'-akh}; a primitive root; to mislay, i.e. to be oblivious of, from want of memory or attention:--X at all, (cause to) forget.]

d. the law [Strong: 2710 chaqaq, khaw-kak'; a primitive root; properly, to hack, i.e. engrave (Judges 5:14, to be a scribe simply); by implication, to enact (laws being cut in stone or metal tablets in primitive times) or (gen.) prescribe:--appoint, decree, governor, grave, lawgiver, note, pourtray, print, set.]

2. “…and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”

a. and pervert [Strong 8138 shanah, shaw-naw'; a primitive root; to fold, i.e. duplicate (literally or figuratively); by implication, to transmute (transitive or intransitive):--do (speak, strike) again, alter, double, (be given to) change, disguise, (be) diverse, pervert, prefer, repeat, return, do the second time.]

b. the judgment [Strong: 1779 duwn, doon; from 1777; judgement (the suit, justice, sentence or tribunal); by impl. also strife:--cause, judgement, plea, strife.]

c. of any [Strong: 3605 kol kole or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).]

d. of the afflicted [Strong: 1121 ben bane from 1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

1). Effects of wine and strong drink.

a). Forget the law.

b). Pervert judgment.

c). Err in vision and stumble in judgment, Isaiah 28:7

d). Your inhibitions will be lowered allowing you to stare at women and your heart will utter perverse things, Proverbs 23:33.

e). It can cause bondage Hosea 4:11.

f). It is linked to defilement, Daniel 1:8
