Hebrews 4:14

Hebrews 4:14

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
.
a. NLT: So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.

b. NIV: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

c. YLT: Having, then, a great chief priest passed through the heavens -- Jesus the Son of God -- may we hold fast the profession,

d. Amplified Bible: Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him].

e. Worrell Translation: Having, therefore, a great High Priest, Who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession;

f. Wuest Translation: Having therefore a High Priest, a great One, One who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us be holding fast our confession.

1. “Seeing then that we have a great high priest…”

a. Seeing [Strong: 2192 echo ekh'-o, including an alternate form scheo skheh'-o; (used in certain tenses only) a primary verb; to hold (used in very various applications, literally or figuratively, direct or remote; such as possession; ability, contiuity, relation, or condition):--be (able, X hold, possessed with), accompany, + begin to amend, can(+ -not), X conceive, count, diseased, do + eat, + enjoy, + fear, following, have, hold, keep, + lack, + go to law, lie, + must needs, + of necessity, + need, next, + recover, + reign, + rest, + return, X sick, take for, + tremble, + uncircumcised, use.]

b. then [Strong: 3767 oun oon apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

c. [that we have] a great [Strong: 3173 megas meg'-as (including the prolonged forms, feminine megale, plural megaloi, etc.; compare also 3176, 3187); big (literally or figuratively, in a very wide application):--(+ fear) exceedingly, great(-est), high, large, loud, mighty, + (be) sore (afraid), strong, X to years.]

d. high priest [Strong: 749 archiereus ar-khee-er-yuce' from 746 and 2409; the high-priest (literally, of the Jews, typically, Christ); by extension a chief priest:--chief (high) priest, chief of the priests.]

1). Hebrews 8 & 9 cover the ministry of Christ Jesus as our High Priest, of which the Old Testament Priesthood are full of types and foreshadows. On a more limited way the Old Testaments Priesthood and the sacrifices show many types and foreshadows of the New Testament believer

2. “…that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…”

e. that is passed [Strong: 1330 dierchomai dee-er'-khom-ahee from 1223 and 2064; to traverse (literally):--come, depart, go (about, abroad, everywhere, over, through, throughout), pass (by, over, through, throughout), pierce through, travel, walk through.]

f. [into the] heavens [Strong: 3772 ouranos oo-ran-os' perhaps from the same as 3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):--air, heaven(-ly), sky.]

g. Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

h. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

i. Son [Strong: 5207 huios hwee-os' apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

j. God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

3. “…let us hold fast our profession.”

a. let us hold fast [Strong: 2902 krateo krat-eh'-o from 2904; to use strength, i.e. seize or retain (literally or figuratively):--hold (by, fast), keep, lay hand (hold) on, obtain, retain, take (by).]

b. [our] profession [Strong: 3671 homologia hom-ol-og-ee'-ah from the same as 3670; acknowledgment:--con- (pro-)fession, professed.]

1). Hebrews 3:1 declares Jesus as the High Priest of our profession which touches on two things. Firstly at the moment of salvation we professed faith in Christ resurrection, his Lordship over our lives and repentence and renouncing sin. Secondly we on a daily basis confess God’s word, the promises of God over our lives in faith, believing as those in Covenant with God that He is faithful. Jesus the High Priest of our profession, confession offers those confessions to God our Father. Here we are told to hold fast to those confessions.
