1. “Discretion shall preserve thee,
understanding shall keep thee:”
a. Discretion [Strong: 4209 4209 mzimmah mez-im-maw' from 2161; a plan,
usually evil (machination), sometimes good (sagacity):--(wicked) device,
discretion, intent, witty invention, lewdness, mischievous (device), thought,
wickedly.]
b. [shall] preserve [Strong: 8104 shamar shaw-mar' a primitive root;
properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect,
attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep(-er, self),
mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure,
(that lay) wait (for), watch(-man).]
c. thee [Strong: 5921 `al al properly, the same as 5920 used as a

follow):--above, according to(-ly), after, (as) against, among, and, X as, at,
because of, beside (the rest of), between, beyond the time, X both and, by
(reason of), X had the charge of, concerning for, in (that), (forth, out) of,
(from) (off), (up-)on, over, than, through(-out), to, touching, X with.]
d. understanding [Strong: 8394 tabuwn taw-boon' and (feminine) tbuwnah
{teb-oo-naw'}; or towbunah {to-boo-naw'}; from 995; intelligence; by
implication, an argument; by extension, caprice:--discretion, reason,
skilfulness, understanding, wisdom.]
e. shall keep [thee] [Strong: 5341 natsar naw-tsar' a primitive root; to
guard, in a good sense (to protect, maintain, obey, etc.) or a bad one (to
conceal, etc.):-- besieged, hidden thing, keep(-er, -ing), monument, observe,
preserve(-r), subtil, watcher(-man).]
1).
The whole passage is Proverbs 2:10-20, and it speaks of how the wisdom of God
out of the Scriptures if you choose to obey will deliver you from the
temptations of ungodly men and ungodly women. An interesting point is that both
the male and female were former believers.
a). Proverbs 2:10-20 When wisdom entereth
into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
2:11 Discretion shall preserve thee,
understanding shall keep thee:
2:12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil
man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
2:13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to
walk in the ways of darkness;
2:14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in
the frowardness of the wicked;
2:15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward
in their paths:
2:16 To deliver thee from the strange woman,
even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
2:17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth,
and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
2:18 For her house inclineth unto death, and
her paths unto the dead.
2:19 None that go unto her return again,
neither take they hold of the paths of life.
2:20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good
men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
