Ephesians 4:18
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.
1. “Having the understanding darkened…”

a). Ephesians 1:15-18 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
b. darkened [Strong: 4654 skotizo skot-id-zo from 4655; to obscure (literally or figuratively):--darken.]
1). In Romans 1:21-23 we see the mental makeup, the train of though of an Idol worshiper. They believe they have God all figured out. When we persist at leaving God out of our thought processes the result is a darkened understanding.
a). Romans 1:21-23 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
26:17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

1). This verse is also very important to the believers because sin can harden a believers heart.
a). Hebrews 3:12, 13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

e. heart [Strong: 2588 kardia kar-dee'-ah prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, "heart"); the heart, i.e. (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle:--(+ broken-)heart(-ed).]
1). The unsaved walk in the spiritual condition of a darkened understanding, their spiritual senses are deadened. In a growing Christian believer having been born again we are exhorted to move from walking like the rest of the world walks in a darkened understanding and a blinded heart. We are to grow in being led by the Spirit and developing our spiritual senses. This verse also sheds light on what happened at the fall of man. Adam and Eve died spiritually and as a result their spiritual understanding was darkened and the spirit/heart was blinded/hardened.
