Ephesians 4:22
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
a. NLT: Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
b. NIV: You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

1. “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man…”
a. That ye [Strong: 5209 humas hoo-mas' accusative case of 5210; you (as the objective of a verb or preposition):--ye, you (+ -ward), your (+ own).]
b. put off [Strong: 659 apotithemi ap-ot-eeth'-ay-mee from 575 and 5087; to put away (literally or figuratively):--cast off, lay apart (aside, down), put away (off).]

1). The phrase “old man” is used three times in the New Testament, here in Ephesians and two other instances. It is referring an individual and their behavior before the new birth, previous to the born again experience.
a). Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
b). Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
2). The old man is contrasted to the new man, after the new birth.
a). 2 Corinthians 5:17, 18 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2. “…which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;”

1). The “old man” is the nature of the person before the new birth, the person still under the influence of the devil. The deceitful lusts that rule the person also corrupt him. This person is following and yielding to the lusts of the flesh.
a). Ephesians 2:1-3 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
