And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

Gordon Lindsay, The Life and Teachings of Christ: As Jesus left the city of Jericho and drew nigh to Jerusalem…he felt it was necessary to disabuse the minds of the people of this declaration in which they supposed that the Kingdom of God was about to appear. He had to show both the multitude and His disciples that he was not then going up to jerusalem to sit on a throne.. In order to correct their expectations, He gave them the Parable of the Pounds, which assured them that the Kingdom of God would come, though the time was not immediately. Many events were to transpire before the kingdom would be outwardly manifested.
