Hebrews 2:18

Hebrews 2:18

For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

a. NLT: Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.

b. NIV: Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

c. YLT: for in that he suffered, himself being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For because He Himself [in His humanity] has suffered in being tempted (tested and tried), He is able [immediately] to run to the cry of (assist, relieve) those who are being tempted and tested and tried [and who therefore are being exposed to suffering].

e. Worrell Translation: for in that He Himself  hath suffered, being tempted. He is able to succor those who are tempted.

1. “For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted…”

a. [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. in [1722 * en] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

c. that [3739 * hos, including feminine he, and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

d. he…hath suffered [3958 * pascho, including the forms patho, and pentho] [Strong: used only in certain tenses for it apparently a primary verb; to experience a sensation or impression (usually painful):--feel, passion, suffer, vex.]

e. himself [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

f. being tempted [3985 *  peirazo] [Strong: from 3984; to test (objectively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline:--assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt(-er), try.]

2. “…he is able to succour them that are tempted.”

a. he is able [1410 * dunamai] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:--be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.]

b. to succor [997 * boetheo] [Strong: from 998; to aid or relieve:--help, succor.]
