Romans 8:17
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs
with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified
together.
a. NLT: And since we are his
children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s
glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
b. NIV: Now if we are children,
then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in
his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
c. YLT: and if children, also
heirs, heirs, indeed, of God, and heirs together of Christ -- if, indeed, we
suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.
d. Amplified Bible Classic: And if
we are [His] children, then we are [His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow
heirs with Christ [sharing His inheritance with Him]; only we must share His
suffering if we are to share His glory.
e. Worrell Translation: and, if
children, heirs also; heirs, indeed, of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if
indeed, we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified with Him.

1). The sufferings he is referring
is our cooperating with the Spirit of God in bringing our bodies in subjection
to God and resisting the flesh.
a). Romans 8:13 For if ye live
after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the
deeds of the body, ye shall live.
b). 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Know ye
not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run,
that ye may obtain.
9:25 And every man that striveth
for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible
crown; but we an incorruptible.
9:26 I therefore so run, not as
uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
9:27 But I keep under my body, and
bring it into
subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself
should be a castaway.
c). Colossians 3:5-7 Mortify
therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness,
inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
3:6 For which things' sake the
wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
3:7 In the which ye also walked
some time, when ye lived in them.
d). 1 Peter 5:8-10 Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour:
5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the
faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that
are in the world.
5:10 But the God of all grace, who
hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have
suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting
the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so
as, (so) that, (for) to.]
b. we may be…glorified together [4888
* sundoxazo] [Strong: from 4862 and
1392; to exalt to dignity in company (i.e. similarly) with:--glorify together.]
c. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
1). Those who have their faith and
heart on participating in the rapture will also purify themselves.
a). 1 John 3:2, 3 Beloved, now are
we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know
that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he
is.
3:3 And every man that hath this
hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
