Hebrews 10:11


Hebrews 10:11

And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

a. ASV: And every priest indeed standeth day by day ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, the which can never take away sins:
  
b. YLT: And every priest, indeed, hath stood daily serving, and the same sacrifices many times offering, that are never able to take away sins.
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Furthermore, every [human] priest stands [at his altar of service] ministering daily, offering the same sacrifices over and over again, which never are able to strip [from every side of us] the sins [that envelop us] and take them away—
1. “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. [Strong: 3303 mén, men; a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with G1161 (this one, the former, etc.):—even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.
c. every [Strong: 3956  pâs, pas; including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:—all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), × daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
d. priest [Strong: 2409 hiereús, hee-er-yooce'; from G2413; a priest (literally or figuratively):—(high) priest.]
e. standeth [Strong: 2476 hístēmi, his'-tay-mee; a prolonged form of a primary στάω stáō stah'-o (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses); to stand (transitively or intransitively), used in various applications (literally or figuratively):—abide, appoint, bring, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, lay, present, set (up), stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up).]
  
f. daily [Strong: 2250 hēméra, hay-mer'-ah; feminine (with G5610 implied) of a derivative of ἧμαι hēmai (to sit; akin to the base of G1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):—age, +alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

g. [Strong: 2596 katá, kat-ah'; a primary particle; (prepositionally) down (in place or time), in varied relations (according to the case (genitive, dative or accusative) with which it is joined):—about, according as (to), after, against, (when they were) × alone, among, and, × apart, (even, like) as (concerning, pertaining to touching), × aside, at, before, beyond, by, to the charge of, (charita-)bly, concerning, + covered, (dai-)ly, down, every, (+ far more) exceeding, × more excellent, for, from … to, godly, in(-asmuch, divers, every, -to, respect of), … by, after the manner of, + by any means, beyond (out of) measure, X mightily, more, × natural, of (up-)on (X part), out (of every), over against, (+ your) × own, + particularly, so, through(-oughout, -oughout every), thus, (un-)to(-gether, -ward), × uttermost, where(-by), with.]
h. ministering [Strong: 3008 leitourgéō, li-toorg-eh'-o; from G3011; to be a public servant, i.e. (by analogy) to perform religious or charitable functions (worship, obey, relieve):—minister.]
i. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
  
j. offering [Strong: 4374 prosphérō, pros-fer'-o; from G4314 and G5342 (including its alternate); to bear towards, i.e. lead to, tender (especially to God), treat:—bring (to, unto), deal with, do, offer (unto, up), present unto, put to.]
k. oftentimes [Strong: 4178 pollákis, pol-lak'-is; multiplicative adverb from G4183; many times, i.e. frequently:—oft(-en, -entimes, -times).]

l. the [Strong: 3588 [Tas] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

m. same [Strong: 846 autós, ow-tos'; from the particle αὖ aû (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:—her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

n. sacrifices [Strong: 2378  thysía, thoo-see'-ah; from G2380; sacrifice (the act or the victim, literally or figuratively):—sacrifice.]

1). These are the offerings that Israelites brought every day during the year.

a). The Burnt offering: Leviticus 1:1-17

b). The Grain offering: Leviticus 2:1-16

c). The Fellowship offering:  Leviticus 3:1-17; 7:12-18

d). The Sin offering: Leviticus 4:1-5:13)

e). The Trespass offering: Leviticus 5:14-6:7

2). Also included in these would be the morning and evening sacrifices: Exodus 29:38-41.

3). Though it was only done once a year it would also include the Day of Atonement: Leviticus 16.

2.  “...which can never take away sins:”

a. which [Strong: 3748 hóstis, hos'-tis; from G3739 and G5100; which some, i.e. any that; also (definite) which same:—X and (they), (such) as, (they) that, in that they, what(-soever), whereas ye, (they) which, who(-soever).]
b. can [Strong: 1410 dýnamai, doo'-nam-ahee; of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:—be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.]
c. never [Strong: 3763 oudépote, oo-dep'-ot-eh; from G3761 and G4218; not even at any time, i.e. never at all:—neither at any time, never, nothing at any time.]
d. take away [Strong: 4014 periairéō, per-ee-ahee-reh'-o; from G4012 and G138 (including its alternate); to remove all around, i.e. unveil, cast off (anchor); figuratively, to expiate:—take away (up).]
e. sins [Strong: 266 hamartía, ham-ar-tee'-ah; from G264; a sin (properly abstract):—offence, sin(-ful).

1). None of these sacrifices could take away sins. It could only cover them with the blood of bulls and goats. The weakness of the Mosaic Covenant was stated repeatedly in Hebrews.
