Hebrews 12:24

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

a. ASV: And to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel.

1. “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [to] Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iēsoûs, ee-ay-sooce'; of Hebrew origin (H3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:—Jesus.]

c. [the] mediator [Strong: 3316 mesítēs, mes-ee'-tace; from G3319; a go-between, i.e. (simply) an internunciator, or (by implication) a reconciler (intercessor):—mediator.]

d. [of the] new [Strong: 3501 néos, neh'-os; including the comparative νεότερος neóteros neh-o'-ter-os; a primary word; "new", i.e. (of persons) youthful, or (of things) fresh; figuratively, regenerate:—new, young.]

e. covenant [Strong: 1242 diathḗkē, dee-ath-ay'-kay; from G1303; properly, a disposition, i.e. (specially) a contract (especially a devisory will):—covenant, testament.]

2. “... and to the blood of sprinkling…”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [to the] blood [Strong: 129 haîma, hah'-ee-mah; of uncertain derivation; blood, literally (of men or animals), figuratively (the juice of grapes) or specially (the atoning blood of Christ); by implication, bloodshed, also kindred:—blood.]

c. [of] sprinkling [Strong: 4473 rhantismós, hran-tis-mos'; from G4472; aspersion (ceremonially or figuratively):—sprinkling.]

1). The phrase “blood of sprinkling”, is referring to two things. Firstly it is referring to the process that occurred under the Old Covenant which was a type and foreshadow in the Law.

a). Exodus 24:6-8 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons: and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

24:7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said we will do, and be obedient.

24:8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

2). This sprinkling of the blood of  bulls and goats that Moses sprinkled on the altar and on the people, cleansed and made them clean in a Covenant sense, i.e., ceremonially, The blood was shed first, then the confession of obedience then the blood was sprinkled.

a).  Hebrews 9:11-14 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

3). Likewise the “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ”, is speaking of the New Covenant and the redemption of man unto God. Under the New Covenant, the Blood was shed, the Spirit draws us unto obedience and the blood is applied.

a). 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

b). 2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

c). Notice the Scripture says, “…that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself…”, not just ‘some”. It is not God’s will that any perish. 2 Peter 3:9 & 1 Timothy 2:4

4). This “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ” was also foretold by Isaiah .

a). Isaiah 52:13-15 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

52:15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

5). The sprinkling of the blood of Christ refers to the redemption of the whole world. The invitation for life in Christ is to all but it will only benefit those who receive what Christ did. It is for that reason that the Apostle Peter can write with inspired authority the next sentence in this verse, “Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.”

3. “...that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

a. [that] speaketh [Strong: 2980 laléō, lal-eh'-o; a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:—preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]

1). Scripture preaches and Scripture says.

a). Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

b. better [things] [Strong: 2909 kreíttōn, krite'-tohn; comparative of a derivative of G2904; stronger, i.e. (figuratively) better, i.e. nobler:—best, better.]

1). Tony Cook, Grace the DNA of God, writes: We are to profit from all of God’s word, even the hello’s and good bye’s! As you read the following salutations and benedictions, personalize them. Allow God to encourage and strengthen you from His grace.

a). “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (This phrase occurs ten times in Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3; 2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:3; Ephesians 1:2; Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:2; and Philemon 3.)

b). “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Similar variations of this phrase occur nine times in Romans 16:20, 24; 1 Corinthians 16:23; Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; 1 Thessalonians 5:28; 2 Thessalonians 3:18; Philemon 25; and Revelation 22:21.)

c). “Grace be with you” (or you all). (This phrase occurs five times in Colossians 4:18; 1 Timothy 6:21; 2 Timothy 4:22; Titus 3:15; and Hebrews 13:25.)

d). “Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Similar variations of this phrase occur four times in 1 Timothy 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:2; Titus 1:4; and 2 John 3.)

e). “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (This phrase occurs in 2 Corinthians 13:14.)

f). “Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.” (Ephesians 6:24.)

g). “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:2.)

h). Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come.” (Revelation 1:4.)

c. than [that] [Strong: 3844 pará, par-ah'; a primary preposition; properly, near; i.e. (with genitive case) from beside (literally or figuratively), (with dative case) at (or in) the vicinity of (objectively or subjectively), (with accusative case) to the proximity with (local (especially beyond or opposed to) or causal (on account of):—above, against, among, at, before, by, contrary to, × friend, from, + give (such things as they), + that (she) had, × his, in, more than, nigh unto, (out) of, past, save, side…by, in the sight of, than, (there-)fore, with.]

d. that [of] [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [hayer: [Ton] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

e. Abel [Strong: 6 Ábel, ab'-el; of Hebrew origin (H1893); Abel, the son of Adam:—Abel.]

1). The blood of Abel cried unto God. Because the Scripture says the blood of Jesus says better things than the blood of Abel, then the blood of Abel probably asked for judgment or revenge. Whereas the blood of Jesus speaks of mercy.

a). Genesis 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
