Hebrews 10:5

Hebrews 10:5

Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

a. ASV: Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith,
Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, But a body didst thou prepare for me;

b. YLT: Wherefore, coming into the world, he saith, 'Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not will, and a body Thou didst prepare for me,
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Hence, when He [Christ] entered into the world, He said, Sacrifices and offerings You have not desired, but instead You have made ready a body for Me [to offer];
1. “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith…”

a. Wherefore [Strong: 1352 dió, dee-o'; from G1223 and G3739; through which thing, i.e. consequently:—for which cause, therefore, wherefore.]
b. [when he] cometh [Strong: 1525 eisérchomai, ice-er'-khom-ahee; from G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively):—X arise, come (in, into), enter in(-to), go in (through).]
c. into [Strong: 1519 eis, ice; a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:—(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, +continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, +perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with.]
d. the [Strong: 3588 [Ton] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]
e. world [Strong: 2889 kósmos, kos'-mos; probably from the base of G2865; orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)):—adorning, world.]

f. [he] saith [Strong: 3004 légō, leg'-o; a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas G2036 and G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:—ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]

2.  “...Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:”

a. Sacrifice [Strong: 2378 thysía, thoo-see'-ah; from G2380; sacrifice (the act or the victim, literally or figuratively):—sacrifice.]
b.  and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
c. offering [Strong: 4376 prosphorá, pros-for-ah'; from G4374; presentation; concretely, an oblation (bloodless) or sacrifice:—offering (up).]
d. thou wouldest [Strong: 2309 thélō, thel'-o; apparently strengthened from the alternate form of G138; to determine (as an active option from subjective impulse; whereas G1014 properly denotes rather a passive acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer (literally or figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in:—desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly)).]
e. not [Strong: 3756  ou, oo; a primary word; the absolute negative (compare G3361) adverb; no or not:—+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

f. but [Strong: 1161 dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

g. [a] body [Strong: 4983 sōma, so'-mah; from G4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively:—bodily, body, slave.]
h. [thou hast] prepared [Strong: 2675 katartízō, kat-ar-tid'-zo; from G2596 and a derivative of G739; to complete thoroughly, i.e. repair (literally or figuratively) or adjust:—fit, frame, mend, (make) perfect(-ly join together), prepare, restore.]
i. me [Strong: 3427 moí, moy; the simpler form of G1698; to me:—I, me, mine, my.]

1). Hebrews 10:5-8 is a citation of Psalm 40:6-8

a). Psalm 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

2). What is interesting is that the Septuagint matches what is said in Hebrews. Where the Jewish translations of Psalm 40:7 have [Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings, “mine ears hast thou opened”; Artscroll Tanach Series, Tehillim, “but receptive ears You opened for me”], and Psalm 40:7 in the Old Testament have, “mine ears hast thou opened”, the citation in Hebrews 10:5 has “but a body thou hast prepared me”.

3). Arthur Pink, An Exposition of Hebrews, p. 540: In it [this passage Hebrews 10:5-7] we are taken back to a point before the foundation of the world, and are permitted to learn something of the august counsels of the Eternal Three. In it we are shown the means which the Divine wisdom appointed for carrying out those counsels. It is both our duty and privilege to prayerfully inquire and diligently search into the mind of the Holy Spirit within.

4). It is easy to see the above in these passages because of what we find in Peter’s first epistle. The plan of redemption is older than the earth.

a). 1 Peter 1:18-20  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

5). The counsels of the Triune Godhead detailing the creation and redemption of man were planned out in the eternal past.

a). Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.
