Hebrews 9:16

Hebrews 9:16

For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

a. ASV: For where a testament is, there must of necessity be the death of him that made it.
  
b. YLT: For where a covenant is, the death of the covenant-victim to come in is necessary,
d. Amplified Bible Classic:  For where there is a [last] will and testament involved, the death of the one who made it must be established,
1. “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.”

a. For [Strong: 1063 gár, gar; a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):—and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]
b. where [Strong: 3699 hópou, hop'-oo; from G3739 and G4225; what(-ever) where, i.e. at whichever spot:—in what place, where(-as, -soever), whither (+ soever).]
c. [a] testament [is] [Strong: 1242  diathḗkē, dee-ath-ay'-kay; from G1303; properly, a disposition, i.e. (specially) a contract (especially a devisory will):—covenant, testament.]
d. [there] must also of necessity [Strong: 318 anánkē, an-ang-kay'; from G303 and the base of G43; constraint (literally or figuratively); by implication, distress:—distress, must needs, (of) necessity(-sary), needeth, needful.]
e. be [Strong: 5342  phérō, fer'-o; a primary verb (for which other, and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; namely, οἴω oíō oy'-o; and ἐνέγκω enénkō en-eng'-ko; to "bear" or carry (in a very wide application, literally and figuratively, as follows):—be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come, + let her drive, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.]
  
f. [the] death [Strong: 2288  phérō, fer'-o; a primary verb (for which other, and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; namely, οἴω oíō oy'-o; and ἐνέγκω enénkō en-eng'-ko; to "bear" or carry (in a very wide application, literally and figuratively, as follows):—be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come, + let her drive, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.]

h. testator [Strong: 1303 diatíthemai, dee-at-ith'-em-ahee; middle voice from G1223 and G5087; to put apart, i.e. (figuratively) dispose (by assignment, compact, or bequest):—appoint, make, testator.]
