Hebrews 12:22

Hebrews 12:22

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

a. ASV: But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,

b. YLT: But, ye came to Mount Zion, and to a city of the living God, to the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of messengers,
d. Amplified Bible Classic: But rather, you have come to Mount Zion, even to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless multitudes of angels in festal gathering,
1. “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God…”

a. But [Strong: 235 allá, al-lah'; neuter plural of G243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):—and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]
b. [ye are] come unto [Strong: 4334 prosérchomai, pros-er'-khom-ahee; from G4314 and G2064(including its alternate); to approach, i.e. (literally) come near, visit, or (figuratively) worship, assent to:—(as soon as he) come (unto), come thereunto, consent, draw near, go (near, to, unto).
c. mount [Strong: 3735 óros, or'-os; probably from an obsolete ὄρω órō (to rise or "rear"; perhaps akin to G142; compare G3733); a mountain (as lifting itself above the plain):—hill, mount(-ain).]
d. Sion [Strong: 4622 Siṓn, see-own'; of Hebrew origin (H6726); Sion (i.e. Tsijon), a hill of Jerusalem; figuratively, the Church (militant or triumphant):—Sion.]
e. and [Strong:2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. [unto the] city [Strong: 4172 pólis, pol'-is; probably from the same as G4171, or perhaps from G4183; a town (properly, with walls, of greater or less size):—city.]

g. [of the] living [Strong: 2198 záō, dzah'-o; a primary verb; to live (literally or figuratively):—life(-time), (a-)live(-ly), quick.]

h. God [Strong: 2316 theós, theh'-os; of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with G3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:—X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]
2. “...the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels.”

a. [the] heavenly [Strong: 2032 epouránios, ep-oo-ran'-ee-os; from G1909 and G3772; above the sky:—celestial, (in) heaven(-ly), high.]
b. Jerusalem [Strong: 2419 Hierousalḗm, hee-er-oo-sal-ame'; of Hebrew origin (H3389); Hierusalem (i.e. Jerushalem), the capitol of Palestine:—Jerusalem.]
c. and [Strong:2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
d. [to an] innumerable [company] [Strong:  myriás, moo-ree'-as; from G3463; a ten-thousand; by extension, a "myriad" or indefinite number:—ten thousand.]
e. [of] angels [Strong: 32 ággelos, ang'-el-os; from ἀγγέλλω aggéllō (probably derived from G71; compare G34) (to bring tidings); a messenger; especially an "angel"; by implication, a pastor:—angel, messenger.]

1). The inspired writer of Hebrews (I believe Paul), is contrasting the New Covenant with the Old, the Mosaic, and the contrasting “mounts”. Mount Sinai is where Moses received the Mosaic Law a physical place that inspired reverential fear and terror. A place that if you violated the commandment you were killed (Hebrews 12:18-21).

2). The heavenly Jerusalem is where New Covenant believers have their citizenship Philippians 3:20).
