Deuteronomy 34:6

Deuteronomy 34:6

And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth Peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

a. ASV: And he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

b. YLT: And He burieth him in a valley in the land of Moab, over-against Beth-Peor, and no man hath known his burying place unto this day.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: And He buried him in the valley of the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.

d. Septuagint: And they buried him in Gai near the house of Phogor; and no one has seen his sepulchre to this day.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: He buried him in the depression, in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, and no one knows his burial place to this day.

1. “And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth Peor…”

a. [And he] buried [Strong: 6912 qâbar, kaw-bar'; a primitive root; to inter:—× in any wise, bury(-ier).

b. him [Strong: 853 'eth ayth apparent contracted from 226 in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly, self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely):--(as such unrepresented in English).]

c. [in a] valley [Strong: 1516 gayʼ, gah'-ee; or (shortened) גַּי gay; probably (by transmutation) from the same root as H1466 (abbreviated); a gorge (from its lofty sides; hence, narrow, but not a gully or winter-torrent):—valley.]

d. [in the] land [Strong: 776  ʼerets, eh'-rets; from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):—× common, country, earth, field, ground, land, × natins, way, + wilderness, world.]

e. [of] Moab [Strong: 4124 Môwʼâb, mo-awb; from a prolonged form of the prepositional prefix m- and H1; from (her [the mother's]) father; Moab, an incestuous son of Lot; also his territory and descendants:—Moab.]

f. [over] against [Strong: 4136 mûwl, mool; or מוֹל môwl; (Deuteronomy 1:1), or מוֹאל môwʼl; (Nehemiah 12:38), or מֻל mul; (Numbers 22:5), from  H4135; properly, abrupt, i.e. a precipice; by implication, the front; used only adverbially (with prepositional prefix) opposite:—(over) against, before, (fore-) front, from, (God-) ward, toward, with.]

g. Beth Peor [Strong: 1047 Bêyth Pᵉʻôwr, bayth pe-ore'; from H1004 and H6465; house of Peor; Beth-Peor, a place East of the Jordan:—Bethpeor.]

1). It appears the “he” is the LORD, that the LORD buried Moses. But this is not the end of the story because there is an interesting verse in the book of Jude, that until now I have not been able to find its purpose.

a). Jude 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

2). Why would Michael the archangel contend with the devil over the body of Moses? There is a familiar passage in the gospels concerning the transfiguration of Jesus that is linked here.
a). Luke 9:28-31 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

3). Here we have Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus. Moses died approximately 1400 years before Christ and of course Elijah never died but was taken up in a fiery chariot. Elijah was there in his flesh and blood body. I am led to believe that the contending of the devil and Michael over the body of Moses had to do with the fact that the devil has the power of death as it says in Hebrews.

a). Hebrews 2:14  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

4). Michael was taking the body of Moses for a future use and the devil didn’t like it and tried to stop him. The future use being the appearance at the transfiguration. Another future use could also be Moses being one of the two witnesses of Revelation 11.

a). Revelation 11:3-12 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
nd their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
11:8 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
11:9 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11:10 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
11:11 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

2. “…but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.”

a. [but no [Strong: 3808 lo' lo or lowi {lo}; or loh (Deut. 3:11) {lo}; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles (as follows):--X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), (X as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, + surely, + as truly as, + of a truth, + verily, for want, + whether, without.]

b. man [Strong: 376 ʼîysh, eesh; contracted for H582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed in translation):—also, another, any (man), a certain, champion, consent, each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-) man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), none, one, people, person, steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy.]

c. knoweth [Strong: 3045 yâdaʻ, yaw-dah'; a primitive root; to know (properly, to ascertain by seeing); used in a great variety of senses, figuratively, literally, euphemistically and inferentially (including observation, care, recognition; and causatively, instruction, designation, punishment, etc.):—acknowledge, acquaintance(-ted with), advise, answer, appoint, assuredly, be aware, (un-) awares, can(-not), certainly, comprehend, consider, × could they, cunning, declare, be diligent, (can, cause to) discern, discover, endued with, familiar friend, famous, feel, can have, be (ig-) norant, instruct, kinsfolk, kinsman, (cause to let, make) know, (come to give, have, take) knowledge, have (knowledge), (be, make, make to be, make self) known, be learned, lie by man, mark, perceive, privy to, × prognosticator, regard, have respect, skilful, shew, can (man of) skill, be sure, of a surety, teach, (can) tell, understand, have (understanding), × will be, wist, wit, wot.]

d. sepulchre [Strong: 6900 qᵉbûwrâh, keb-oo-raw'; or קְבֻרָה qᵉburâh; feminine passive participle of H6912; sepulture; (concretely) a sepulchre:—burial, burying place, grave, sepulchre.]

e. to [Strong: 5704 `ad ad properly, the same as 5703 (used as a preposition, adverb or conjunction; especially with a preposition); as far (or long, or much) as, whether of space (even unto) or time (during, while, until) or degree (equally with):--against, and, as, at, before, by (that), even (to), for(-asmuch as), (hither-)to, + how long, into, as long (much) as, (so) that, till, toward, until, when, while, (+ as) yet.]

f. this [Strong: 2088  zeh zeh a primitive word; the masculine demonstrative pronoun, this or that:--he, X hence, X here, it(-self), X now, X of him, the one...the other, X than the other, (X out of) the (self) same, such (a one) that, these, this (hath, man), on this side...on that side, X thus, very, which. ]

g. day [Strong: 3117 yôwm, yome; from an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figurative (a space of time defined by an associated term), (often used adverb):—age, always, chronicals, continually(-ance), daily, ((birth-), each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), elder, × end, evening, (for) ever(-lasting, -more), × full, life, as (so) long as (... live), (even) now, old, outlived, perpetually, presently, remaineth, ×required, season, × since, space, then, (process of) time, as at other times, in trouble, weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), × whole ( age), (full) year(-ly), younger.]

1). The reason no one knows where Moses was buried is because God did not allow it because he probably is not there, being raised from the dead in order to participate in his future earthly ministries for the Lord.
