Leviticus 8:22

And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

1. “And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration…”

a. 2. “...and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.”

[the] head [Strong: 7218 rôʼsh, roshe; from an unused root apparently meaning to shake; the head (as most easily shaken), whether literal or figurative (in many applications, of place, time, rank, etc.):—band, beginning, captain, chapiter, chief(-est place, man, things), company, end, × every (man), excellent, first, forefront, (be-)head, height, (on) high(-est part, (priest)), × lead, × poor, principal, ruler, sum, top.]

1). This was the ram for consecration, it was to consecrate the Aaronic Priesthood to God for service. They applied their hands upon the head to identify with the animal. The application of the blood upon the various parts of the body are symbolic but powerful. The blood was applied to their ear to impress upon them they were to be quick to hear and obey. The blood was applied to their thumb to impress upon them they were to work with their hands to the glory of God. The blood was applied to their big toe to impress upon them to walk in the ways of the LORD.

2). These symbolic applications are also to apply to us also for we are New Testament priests unto God.

a). 1 Peter 2:5, 9 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:

3). The word pictures drawn by the literal instructions of the priesthood in the Old Testament are very edifying to us the New Covenant. For instance comparing the offering of the burnt offering in Leviticus 1 and Romans 12:1, 2 of our presenting our bodies to the Lord is wonderful. Therefore it is no great surprise that these same exhortations are clearly repeated in the New Testament concerning our behavior.

a). 2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

b). 1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

c). Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

c). Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

4). The Aaronic Priesthood was also to foreshadow the Priesthood of Jesus.

a). Hebrews 4:12-14 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

b). Hebrews 9:11-14 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
