Numbers 13:23

And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

a. ASV: And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a staff between two; they brought also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

b. YLT: And they come in unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down thence a branch and one cluster of grapes, and they bear it on a staff by two, also some of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

1. “And they came unto the brook of Eshcol…”

a. [the] brook [Strong: 5158 nachal, nakh'-al; or (feminine) נַחְלָה nachlâh; (Psalm 124:4), or נַחֲלָה nachălâh; (Ezekiel 47:19; Ezekiel 48:28), from H5157 in its original sense; a stream, especially a winter torrent; (by implication) a (narrow) valley (in which a brook runs); also a shaft (of a mine):—brook, flood, river, stream, valley.]

d. [of] Eschol [Strong: 812 ʼEshkôl, esh-kole'; the same as H811; Eshcol, the name of an Amorite, also of a valley in Palestine:—Eshcol.]

2. “...and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff…”

a. [and] cut [down] [Strong: 3772  kârath, kaw-rath'; a primitive root; to cut (off, down or asunder); by implication, to destroy or consume; specifically, to covenant (i.e. make an alliance or bargain, originally by cutting flesh and passing between the pieces):—be chewed, be con-(feder-) ate, covenant, cut (down, off), destroy, fail, feller, be freed, hew (down), make a league (covenant), × lose, perish, × utterly, × want.]

d. [with] one [Strong: 259 ʼechâd, ekh-awd'; a numeral from H258; properly, united, i.e. one; or (as an ordinal) first:—a, alike, alone, altogether, and, any(-thing), apiece, a certain, (dai-) ly, each (one), eleven, every, few, first, highway, a man, once, one, only, other, some, together,

e. cluster [Strong: 811 ʼeshkôwl, esh-kole'; or אֶשְׁכֹּל ʼeshkôl; probably prolonged from H810; a bunch of grapes or other fruit:—cluster (of grapes).]

1). This obviously where the area received it’s name from.

f. [of] grapes [Strong: 6025  ʻênâb, ay-nawb'; from an unused root probably meaning to bear fruit; a grape:—(ripe) grape, wine.]

g. [and they] bare [it] [Strong: 5375 nâsâʼ, naw-saw'; or נָסָה nâçâh; (Psalm 4:6 [7]), a primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literal and figurative, absolute and relative:—accept, advance, arise, (able to, (armor), suffer to) bear(-er, up), bring (forth), burn, carry (away), cast, contain, desire, ease, exact, exalt (self), extol, fetch, forgive, furnish, further, give, go on, help, high, hold up, honorable ( man), lade, lay, lift (self) up, lofty, marry, magnify, × needs, obtain, pardon, raise (up), receive, regard, respect, set (up), spare, stir up, swear, take (away, up), × utterly, wear, yield.]

i. [upon] a staff [Strong: 4132 môwṭ, mote; from H4131; a wavering, i.e. fall; by implication, a pole (as shaking); hence, a yoke (as essentially a bent pole):—bar, be moved, staff, yoke.]

1). It took two grown men to carry one cluster of grapes! That is amazing.

3. “...and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.”

a. [and they] brought of [Strong: 4480 min min or minniy {min-nee'}; or minney (constructive plural) {min-nay'}; (Isaiah 30:11); for 4482; properly, a part of; hence (prepositionally), from or out of in many senses (as follows):--above, after, among, at, because of, by (reason of), from (among), in, X neither, X nor, (out) of, over, since, X then, through, X whether, with.]

b. pomegranates [Strong: 7416 rimmôwn, rim-mone'; or רִמֹּן rimmôn; from H7426; a pomegranate, the tree (from its upright growth) or the fruit (also an artificial ornament):—pomegranate.]
