Matthew 22:45

Matthew 22:45

If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

a. ASV: If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son?

b. YLT: If then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?'
d. Amplified Bible Classic:  If then David thus calls Him Lord, how is He his Son?
1. “If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?”

a. If [Strong: ei, i; a primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that, etc.:—forasmuch as, if, that, (al-)though, whether. Often used in connection or composition with other particles, especially as in G1489, G1490, G1499, G1508, G1509, G1512, G1513, G1536, G1537.]
b. David [Strong: 1138  Dabíd, dab-eed'; of Hebrew origin (H1732); Dabid (i.e. David), the Israelite king:—David.]
c. then [Strong: 3767 oûn, oon; apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:—and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]
d. call [Strong: 2564 kaléō, kal-eh'-o; akin to the base of G2753; to "call" (properly, aloud, but used in a variety of applications, directly or otherwise):—bid, call (forth), (whose, whose sur-)name (was (called)).]
e. him [Strong: 846 autós, ow-tos'; from the particle αὖ aû (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:—her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

f. Lord [Strong: 2962 kýrios, koo'-ree-os; from κῦρος kŷros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):—God, Lord, master, Sir.]

g. how [Strong: 4459 pōs, poce; adverb from the base of G4226; an interrogative particle of manner; in what way? (sometimes the question is indirect, how?); also as exclamation, how much!:—how, after (by) what manner (means), that. (Occasionally unexpressed in English).]
h. is [he] [Strong: 2076 estí, es-tee'; third person singular present indicative of G1510; he (she or it) is; also (with neuter plural) they are:—are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth, × dure for a while, + follow, × have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, × must needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]
i. his [Strong: 846 autós, ow-tos'; from the particle αὖ aû (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:—her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

j. son [Strong: 5207  huiós, hwee-os'; apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:—child, foal, son.]

1). The enemies of Jesus, the Sadducees and the Pharisees were constantly trying to entangle Jesus in his speaking. They were not able to of course, and then Jesus asked them a question he knew they could not answer.

a). Matthew 22:41-46   While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.
22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
22:44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

2). The answer of course if found Revelation.

a). Revelation 22:16 I Jesus sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
