And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

1. “And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan…”

The instructions Moses gave the spies was to completely search out the land, to search out the strengths and weaknesses of the inhabitants, if the cities are walled or not and find out the natural resources of the land and secure a sample of edible fruit if possible. This was not God’s original idea. The leaders of the tribes came to Moses, and though it doesn’t say it, Moses took it to God, and as we see here he obviously agreed and gave him the command to send the spies.
