Leviticus 20:13

Leviticus 20:13

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

a. ASV: And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

b. YLT: 'And a man who lieth with a male as one lieth with a woman; abomination both of them have done; they are certainly put to death; their blood is on them.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: If a man lies with a male as if he were a woman, both men have committed an offense (something perverse, unnatural, abhorrent, and detestable); they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

1. “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination…”

a. e. mankind [Strong: 2145 zâkâr, zaw-kawr'; from H2142; properly, remembered, i.e. a male (of man or animals, as being the most noteworthy sex):—× him, male, man(child, -kind).]

j. [an] abomination [Strong: 8441 tôwʻêbah, to-ay-baw'; or תֹּעֵבַה tôʻêbah; feminine active participle of H8581; properly, something disgusting (morally), i.e. (as noun) an abhorrence; especially idolatry or (concretely) an idol:—abominable (custom, thing), abomination.]

Wright has persuasively argued, arsenokoites was probably coined by Hellenistic Jews from a conflation of two Greek words appearing in the Septuagint’s rendering of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13: meta arsenos ou koimethese koiten gynaikeian (Leviticus 18:22); hos an koimethe meta arsenos koiten gynaikos (Leviticus 20:13). The Greek word for “male” is arsen and the word for “bed” or “lying” is koite (related to the verb keisthai, “to lie”), to which has been attached a masculine personal suffix –(t)es denoting the agent or doer of the action (a man/one who…”)

2). The Hebrew term to describe a man lying with a man is zâkâr mishkâb (male lying). The Greek transliteration is arsenokoites (arsen male koite bed) [James B. De Young, Professor of NT, Western Conservative Baptist Seminary:  “Paul coined the term arsenkoitai, deriving it from the LXX translation of Leviticus 20:13 (cf. 18:22) and using it for homosexual orientation and behavior, the latter of which should be an occasion for church discipline (1 Corinthians 5-6), and legislation in society (1 Timothy 1:8-11).”]

a. d.
