1). This is a tragic story about a young man of God who was charged by God to deliver a word to Jeroboam and then immediately return to Judah.

13:8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
13:9 For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

2). As we shall see, he was deceived and lied to by old prophet, and because he did not stay true to the original word God gave him, he lost his life. The lesson in this is if God has spoken to you about what He wants you to do and you are in the midst of obeying Him and someone else comes up prophesying over you to do something different, do not listen to them unless God speaks to you also concerning  the change! For the New Covenant believer, we are to hear from God ourselves, and when someone else speaks over us, it should be a confirmation to us, not a contradiction.

2. “...and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.”

a. [and] Jeroboam [Strong: 3379 Yârobʻâm, yaw-rob-awm'; from H7378 and H5971; (the) people will contend; Jarobam, the name of two Israelite kings:—Jeroboam.] [The KJV translates Strong's H3379 in the following manner: Jeroboam (104x).]

c. by [Strong: 5921 `al al properly, the same as 5920 used as a preposition (in the singular or plural often with prefix, or as conjunction with a particle following); above, over, upon, or against (yet always in this last relation with a downward aspect) in a great variety of applications (as follow):--above, according to(-ly), after, (as) against, among, and, X as, at, because of, beside (the rest of), between, beyond the time, X both and, by (reason of), X had the charge of, concerning for, in (that), (forth, out) of, (from) (off), (up-)on, over, than, through(-out), to, touching, X with.]

d. [the] altar [Strong: 4196 mizbêach, miz-bay'-akh; from H2076; an altar:—altar.] [The KJV translates Strong's H4196 in the following manner: altar (402x).]

e. [to] burn incense [Strong: 6999 qâṭar, kaw-tar'; a primitive root (identical with through the idea of fumigation in a close place and perhaps thus driving out the occupants); to smoke, i.e. turn into fragrance by fire (especially as an act of worship):—burn (incense, sacrifice) (upon), (altar for) incense, kindle, offer (incense, a sacrifice).] [The KJV translates Strong's H6999 in the following manner: incense (59x), burn (49x), offer (3x), kindle (1x), offering (1x), miscellaneous (4x).]
