2 Chronicles 5:9

 2 Chronicles 5:9

And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.

a. ASV: And the staves were so long that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without: and there it is unto this day.

b. YLT: And they lengthen the staves, and the heads of the staves are seen out of the ark on the front of the oracle, and they are not seen without; and it is there unto this day.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: And they drew out the poles of the ark, so that the ends of the poles protruding from the ark were visible from the front of the Holy of Holies, but were not visible from without. It is there to this day.

d. Septuagint: And the staves projected, and the heads of the staves were seen from the holy place in front of the oracle, they were not seen without: and there they were to this day.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: They extended the staves so that the tips of the staves from the Ark were noticeable upon the Partition, but were not showing on the outside; they remained there to this very day.

1. “And they drew out the staves of the ark…”

a. [And they] drew out [Strong: 748 ʼârak, aw-rak'; a primitive root; to be (causative, make) long (literally or figuratively):—defer, draw out, lengthen, (be, become, make, pro-) long, (out-, over-) live, tarry (long).] [The KJV translates Strong's H748 in the following manner: prolong (18x), long (5x), lengthen (3x), draw out (3x), defer (2x), tarried (1x), ...lived (with H3117 0310) (2x).]

b. [the] staves [of the ark] [Strong: 905  bad, bad; from H909; properly, separation; by implication, a part of the body, branch of a tree, bar for carrying; figuratively, chief of a city; especially (with prepositional prefix) as an adverb, apart, only, besides:—alone, apart, bar, besides, branch, by self, of each alike, except, only, part, staff, strength.] [The KJV translates Strong's H905 in the following manner: stave (37x), beside (3x), branches (3x), alone (2x), only (2x), strength (2x), apart (1x), bars (1x), each (1x), except (1x), beside him (1x), like (1x), themselves (1x).]

1). It was expressly forbidden by God to remove the staves.

a). Exodus 25:13-15 And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

25:14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them.

25:15 The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.

2). Barnes' Notes on the Bible: It was forbidden to withdraw the staves wholly from the rings (margin reference); but they appear to have been now drawn forward in such a way that their ends or heads could be seen from the holy place, or great chamber of the temple, though without their being visible from the porch or vestibule.

3). The comparative verse is found in 1 Kings 8:8 And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.
