1). Elijah did not die and he did not go to heaven. No one could go to heaven before the death and resurrection of Christ. Unredeemed man went to hell and redeemed men and women went to Abraham’s bosom which was in the center of the earth (Luke 16:19-31). It was not until Jesus ascended into heaven at the end of his forty days on earth after the resurrection that all redeemed men and women went to heaven when they died (Acts 1:9, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). Unredeemed men and women still go to hell and it is still in the center of the earth.
2). Even though the prophetic students knew that Elijah was going to be taken away, it appears they did not know that he was taken away permanently, because they still wanted to look for him thinking that the Spirit of God had just taken him to another location not far away (2 Kings 2:15-18). It was commonly known that Elijah had been supernaturally transported probably on more than one occasion (1 Kings 18:8-12).
3). In the New Testament Philip experienced the same supernatural transportation.
a). Acts 8:39, 40 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
8:40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
4). These examples are foreshadows of the catching away of the saints of the Lord.
a). 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
5). There are only two people who have ever lived and have never died a physical death, Enoch (Genesis 5:21-24), and Elijah. Bible believing scholars teach that both Enoch and Elijah will be the two witnesses who will appear on the earth during the great tribulation and with supernatural power witness for the Lord (Revelation 11:3-7). But they also shall be martyred and after their dead bodies lie in the streets for three days they will be raised to life and will ascend into heaven.
a). Revelation 11:7-12 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11:11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
