And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

1. “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him…”


a. And [Strong: 1161 dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]


b. their [Strong: 846 autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

eyes [Strong: 3788 ophthalmós, of-thal-mos'; from G3700; the eye (literally or figuratively); by implication, vision; figuratively, envy (from the jealous side-glance):—eye, sight.]


d. [were] opened [Strong: 1272 dianoígō, dee-an-oy'-go; from G1223 and G455; to open thoroughly, literally (as a first-born) or figuratively (to expound):—open.] [Thayer: to open by dividing or drawing asunder, to open thoroughly (what had been closed), a male opening the womb (the closed matrix), i.e. the first-born, of the eyes and the ears, to open the mind of one, i.e. to cause to understand a thing, to open one's soul, i.e. to rouse in one the faculty of understanding or the desire of learning.]


1). This was not their physical eyes because they were open. It was the eyes of their spiritual understanding that were opened which only comes through revelation of the Spirit. Remember, it was only after Jesus rebuked them and expounded to them all the Old Covenant verses regarding himself that they knew him.


a). Luke 24:25-31 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

24:28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

24:29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

24:30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

24:31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.


2). This is the kind of revelation that Paul prayed for the church to receive concerning our inheritance in Christ.


a). Ephesians 1:15-23 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.


3). As spirit beings we not only have the natural senses of taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing, we have spiritual senses also. In Matthew 13:9 when Jesus said, “Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” He wasn’t referring to physical ears, he was referring to spiritual ears.

 

a). Psalm 42:1, 2 As the deer panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

 

b). Psalm 143:6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land.

 

c).   Isaiah 55:1-2 HO, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

55:2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

 

(1) Notice in the above passage that we “eat” by hearkening diligently or obeying.

 

d). Hebrews 5:11-14 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing,

5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not strong meat.

5:13 For everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
